Message: When you turn the key to start the engine, and all you hear are clicks from the starter, it's usually a sign of a weak or almost dead battery or poor power connections, as boomer stated.

Message: Try this... Go to the nearest parts store and get yourself a Battery post and clamp brush. While you are there, you can pick up some pads for the posts, usually red with a grease like substance on it. Clean your post and clamp, put the pads on them and reconnect the clamps. It doesn't take much corrosion to start weakening your connection....

Message: Also check the ground at the other end of the negative lead from battery. They can rust. If this doesn't fix the problem. You either have a dead spot in your armature or a bad selinoid. I'm beting on the selinoid. If you got a helper. have him turn the key to start the truck. repeat till it just clicks. When it clicks, have him hold it in start position and you tap on the selinoid. If it starts, you found the problem without doubt.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Dad's 3500 did the same thing. We have had nothing but starter problems out of it. I would check the wires from the starter to see if they are bare, grounding out, or just loose. In order for them to work properly they need the full crank load.

Message: I had this same thing happen with my 88 2wd with 3.9 v6. I was told that the contacts in the solonoid were bad, so I just ran a cable from the battery to a push button starter switch like what was used on old farm tractors. I mounted the switch below the headlight switch in the dash, and then ran cable from there to the post on the starter motor. To start the truck, turn the key until it clicks, then push the button and release both the key and the button when the engine starts. It's less complicated than it sounds. Cost me $18 instead of $200. hope this might help. Kippster
