Im getting some detonation when my engine is under a slight load, it runs great when on a flat road but when it tries an uphill climb I get the knock. I mentioned this to the dealer tech and he said that the V6 and V8 heads have problems with casting cracks and the heads will need to be replaced. A leak-down and compression test will confirm this.

Anyone else ever have to replace their heads?

Sounds like a leaky plenum gasket see the thread on this board on how to check and repair. I have followed this board for years and never have heard of a problem with the heads themselves. They seem to withstand blowers, nitrous and strokers so I would think the tech is full of hot air.

The most common fix (if not a plenum leak) are the following steps -

(1) Brass cap and rotor (NAPA). One step colder plug Autolight or NGK. Good plug wires loomed properly.

(2) 180 degree thermostat change out.

(3) Mid- Grade fuel.

I performed those steps in that basic order to cure Mr. Ping under load. The mid-grade fuel is only needed in hotter months. These lean engines are known for pinging. They run way too hot at 190 as well. The colder thermostat seemed to be the biggest contributor to eliminating my detonation.

To meet strict emmissions standards Dodge shipped these engines programmed to run lean. The 180 thermostat tricks the computer into thinking the engine is still cold and not up to "normal" operating temp. It then adjusts the fuel mixture slightly richer to speed warm up. Ahh, just what she needs, a richer mixture - all the time. This will not effect milage, emmission tests or heater temp to a noticable degree.

The colder plug (gapped at factory spec.)also helps prevent ping. The idle may smooth out a bit as a bonus.

Detonation is very bad. Make it go away.

Today, I talked with a guy at my local tune-up shop and he told me that our Dakotas have higher compression ratios than other trucks, so if a small amount of carbon builds up- pinging happens!

He told me to bring my engine to normal operating temp. and then slowly pour a quart of water down the throttle body while the engine is turning about 2500rpms. This will "steam" the combustion chambers clean from carbon.

I got about 6 feet of 1/4" vacuum tubing and a 1/4" tee. I cut two pieces 18" long and attatched each tube to the tee. I drove my truck around for 10 minutes to warm it up real good then shut the truck off and removed the two 1/4" vacuum plugs. I put the longest tube in a 1/2 gallon jug of water and the other two ends were connected to both sides of the intake manifold's 1/4" vacuum nipples.

This way, I can control the RPMs from inside the truck where I can see the RPM guage. I started my truck and immediately punched it to 2500/3000 RPMs until the water nearly ran empty.

After that, no more pinging! I was amazed at how well it worked.

The V6 heads are not as prone to craking as the
V8 heads are and its very rare to get a crack

carbon
vack leak
o2 sensor running lean

what you need to do is drop a new set of plugs
in like the autolite 5224 run it 200 miles than
pull them and read the plugs this will tell you
what is going on

1 colder 3923 $0.99 each at walmart a $6
investment to see what is going on

if they are white its to lean
o2 sensor
vack leak
engine temp sensor
IAT sensor
bad map

Althow the 1 colder may solve it

start doing some checking

sea foam also works well for carbon removal
why did it carbon up that tells me the air/fuel
ratio is rich, partial pluged cat
ngk.com get a new o2 sensor

If it does it again start looking at these things
the motor will not build up carbon something
caused it

The truck has 150,000 miles on it, mostly highway but some city, it's a work truck so it see's some rough driving at times and frequently carries a load of about 300 lbs, not a lead foot but not a granny either. I like to punch it when I need too...

I was able to get under the hood the other day and check a couple things out, there is a small amount of oil on the plenum gasket under the throttle body, not a bunch like a puddle, but a nice slick coating, kinda like how you would spray a cooking pan with Pam. How much oil is acceptable? I would assume NONE!

I checked the routing of the coil wire as per the TSB 18-48-98 and it's fine, pulled the plugs and they look fine, slight discoloration and no specs of brown or oil, they only have about 12k on them so they look fine. I might go the cheap route and install a set of Autolite 3923 plugs to see what difference that makes before diving into the gasket, but I think that's going to be the culprit.

Since there is a TSB (09-05-00) on this issue, shouldn't the dealer be responsible for the repair?

that TSB will probably only get you the "Death Flash" which pulls timing advance(and subsequently power) out of the PCM.

from what you described in the intake i don't think it's the plenum gasket. the colder plugs should help and also try some mid-grade fuel.

my '00 pings really bad with Chevron reg.i try to stay away from that. all other brands even the no-names don't give me that problem.

probably carbon, just get some water like the previous guy said or seafoam and follow directions

prepare yourself if a big chunk breaks off, you'll think the truck is going to the scrap yard, worst noise I think I've ever heard coming out of an engine, just keep revving... it'll clear out. don't do in garage niether (smokey)

With Seafoam use 1/3 of the can poured into the brake vacuum line. Do it slowly. Dont be surprised if a code appears (for example, cylinder misfire) and if one does just remove the negative battery terminal for a couple minutes.
