Subject: Verifying Fuel pump or splice problem

Hi all-
I've been able to use the information from this forum to repair my cousin's '95 Dakota 3.9. Many thanks for that. His truck has 158k miles. Last week I took care of many of the typical problems - timing chain, cat. converter, cap, rotor, wires, cleaned TB, headlight switch, rear brakes. I had checked fuel pressure and it was a steady 40lbs. Today he called me and said his truck stalled on the way to work - cranks but doesn't fire. Tow truck driver started it briefly on starting fluid. I had emailed him info on the splice - but he said he might have to have it towed to a shop and doesn't think they'll check that. Any thoughts that they will actually check for power back to the pump first? Any recommendations for him. He wants to have me work on it but is an hour away. Ideas appreciated - Steve H.

Quick update - looks like he's getting it towed home and then I get to pick it up with my trailer. Do I need to drop the tank to verify power at the pump? I intend to check/resolder the splice first and then check power. Does power go from the splice to a fuel pump relay, or is it direct? Suppose a wiring diagram would help. Thanks,

2 ways of doing it,
drop the tank or unbolt an slide the bed back

mines a 94 i went the bed route, glad i did was much easier for me anyway

and check at the rail
if your getting fuel your getting power to the pump
its just how much presure your getting & needed

i just checked the board
cant find that post
dang Larry just mentioned fuel pressure not more then a week ago

sorry i couldnt have been more help
and i'm sure b4 i get back you'll have plenty of the guys chiming in on this post
maybe even Larry will stop bye

I thought it was 35-45 for the 1995. When I checked it, the gauge was a steady 40lbs. Didn't drop with the truck off for a long time, and was steady with increased throttle.

Another thing that bothered me. When I gave it a steady increase in throttle it runs very smooth. If I give it a big BLIP, the motor jerks/stumbles/hesitates for a second.

BTW - I'm really hoping it's just a problem at the splice connection. That would save a lot of time and cost. They certainly don't seem to give these fuel pumps away either - over $200 at Napa. Hope it doesn't need it. My cousin's not the richest guy either.

I'll just have to start checking when I pick his truck up.

go ahead and resolder the splice. Why? odds are you'll have to do it later anyway. and it's a cheap option to try first.

have you checked the relay as well? you should be able to swap the fuel on for another in the PDC.

I changed the pump out in my old 95, i went the bedroute too, easier to do (less messy).

I haven't checked anything yet... my cousin's truck is currently getting towed to his house. I will probably call him tonight and have him swap around the relays - that might pinpoint a bad one. That would be quicker than me driving an hour each way to get his truck.
If it leads to a bad FP, can I just tip the bed up to allow access to the gas tank?

drop the spare tire, remove the fuel filler from the bed, disconnect the lights, losen the bolts holding the bed to the frame, pick up the entire bed and rest it on the bumper and back tire (be sure to line the bumper with something for padding to avoid damaging the paint.

i found it easier to do this than drop the tank with gas in it. Both require 2 people to do safely anyway. Removing the bed is much easier and less messy.

was just thinking if not see'ing its a 95 while your working on it
it would be a good time to get at it too

I still have to go pick up my cousin's truck before I can work on it. Some time this week. The underhood "splice" hasn't been checked yet - I'm hoping that's the cause of the problem. Or maybe just the fuel pump relay or ASD relay. I'll let you know what I find.

if there is any corrosion on it, redo it. When I had this issue, i only saw a little corrosion but that was the cause of my issues.

make sure you tape it up well after you redo it.

It was the splice!! I drove out to my cousin's house last night. Found the green corrosion powder showing through the wire harness tape. The red/white wires were completely seperate. I cut out the bad section and replaced some wire. Taped it back up and the truck started right up.

I unbolted the fuse box and moved it aside. If you follow the wires from the fuse box down to where it ties into the main harness - then back about an inch past where another bundle of wires branches out toward the ground- you should find the red wire connector. It is wrapped in tape along with the rest of the harness. Unwrap/remove all of the electrical tape in the area. You're looking for 3 red wires with white lines connecting to a single red/white wire. (At least the '95 model had these colors). This connection is where the problem occurs. Good luck.
