Message: What is the difference between a 97 Dakota and a 98 Dakota? I am looking forward to buying a programmer and it says for 98 and newer. I thought that they were all the same?

Message: The 1997 dakota was the first year of the OB2 diagnostic system. You can pull codes with the OB1 trick and get better codes using a scanner. My 97 only has 1 O2 sensor...after the catalytic converter, the newer trucks have 2 or more sensors.
My guess is that the 97 trucks computer is ONE YEAR specific and does not fall under the umbrella of the 98 - 03? dakotas that have the same basic systems.
In a nutshell, the 97 isn't a 96, and it isn't a 98, it's a 97 and that's that....as far as the computer goes anyway.
