Subject: IAT RELOCATION

I've heard about this mod a lot on here, but I havnt heard any detail or seen pictures of what I have to do. It sounds pretty simple but I have one of those CAI's so it's not the stock intake tube. I also plan on doing the crank sensor mod. Thanks for all the info Larry, I have a whole list of mods I want to do now :)

Not sure what size hole you need...but I'm sure it goes the same way whether you got a CAI or the stock tube. Mod is simple from what I gathered...unscrew the sensor from the stock location, plug with the proper size pipe plug or whatever they say to use, move the sensor to the new location on the intake tube. You may have to splice the wires, but that's pretty easy as well. Sorry, I can't explain it better...never done it myself. I don't even have an intake tube...lol

its 1/4" npt thread. the IAT is located in the first runner on on left side of the intake manifold. you may have to extend the wires.

every truck reacts different to the mod. i did it on my '00 3.9 5spd and all i got was worse gas mileage. others have gained from it. i think it has to do more with having a manual trans as opposed to an auto.

Not sure if it's because of auto vs manual tranny's, but I've definitely heard it's a hit-or-miss mod.

Its 1/8 npt not 1/4

Most trucks that do not react well to this mod
have other issues like bad or lazy sensors

Another problem is they relocate to a bad spot
the best is 6" from throttle body in bottom of
air cleaner or air tube it must pick up some
engine heat if it reads below 50 it will trip
a code sensor voltage to high

In the stock location it will read 180 to 200
relocating 6" from tb it will read 90 to 120
which is perfict and a realistic reading to the
actual air temp entering the motor

It does 2 things, adds 1 to 2 degrees of timing
and richens up the fuel mixture under exceleration
this and the crank sensor mod work well togather

Thanks guys! Looking forward to doing this and the crank sensor mod! I'll probably end up getting the NGK o2 sensors so I don't have to worry about a bad or lazy sensor.

So, let me get this straight.

You are essentially pulling the IAT sensor ( unscrewing it ) from the aluminum intake manifold - stock placement, and relocating it into the plastic intake runner from the throttle body to the air filter?

I think I got it figured out now.

Question is...what about those days up in the hinterlands when the daily weather is below freezing? Is this a better mod for summer driving only?

If it's not moved TOO far, the engine should have warmed the air enough that it won't throw a code for the air being too cold...if it throws a code, you'll need to move it back though. Or move it somewhere closer to the engine so it doesn't throw a code.

The only question I have now is.. What do you plug the hole with where the sensor was? Thanks GB2000 for the idea but I'd like to see if anyone else has done this mod and see what they've used.

1/4" npt pipe plug form the local hardware store. put a little thread sealant on it and thread into the manifold.

That info was taken from someone who has done the mod...I believe it was Larry who mentioned it in another post. I just posted it rather than linking to it since I was a lil buzzed at the time and I had no clue what post it was in...lol

Mike...do what I did. Instead of removing existing IAT sensor...just by a new one and locate it in desired location. Then you can switch the wires depending on the season......if you need to....or say just before emissions inspection.

I believe Larry said he does that too...he's got one wired up somewhere in or near the grill which he runs when it's warmer outside (approx 60*F+) and one in the stock location when it's so cold it'll throw a code anywhere else.

not to burst anyone's bubble, but I "have" this mod done and don't notice a thing. I even have it located about halfway down my intake tube. (it is actually directly across from where it is located in the manifold) I use a volant intake. Not sure what is wrong with my truck, but all of these things that people say change its performance, never work with mine. Like the 180t-stat. I've never had a code thrown either (execpt with my venom, but that is another issue)

see my results here

greg, i had the same results as you. these trucks all react different to different mods. i did notice a little with the IAT mod but the drop in mileage wasn't worth the barely noticeable gain to me. maybe if i install the 1.7 RR's i have it may do more.

Yeah Greg...like Daddio said, these mods don't work for everyone. I haven't done the iat relocation mod, but I did the CPS-mod and 180 t-stat. Didn't really notice much on the CPS-mod...and didn't notice hardly anything (if anything at all) with the 180 t-stat. A lot of these mods aren't that noticeable alone anyway...many of them are better when added in conjunction with other mods.
