Message: i have been noticing my truck making a funny noise every time i drive it for more than a few miles. every time i press lightly on the gas, or when im running at low rpms, it sounds like a tin can is rattling around under the truck. it also makes a similar sound when shifting between the first 3 gears. the truck is a '94 3.9l V6 with a 5 spd manual tranny. the engine has been recently replaced, and has about 50,000 miles, and i believe the tranny is original, with about 193,000 miles. any help on what this sound could be is greatly appreciated

Message: could check the cat converter. heard of crude getting fouled up in there and causing noises like you say.
on a side note why you replace the engine. my truck is at 193000 original miles, rebuilt tranny same engine. mine seems to be still okay.
other than that, I'd get under the truck if you could and rev it till it makes that noise again. I actually had a similar problem. got undr the truck and found a loose exhaust pipe. damn. listened to that noise for close to a couple of months and it was just a loost bolt attachment point thingy. good luck.

Message: ya
i think he hit the nail on the head there
i have a 94 did the same thing
even when i first tried shaking the cat, nothing!
week later i was real aggrivated
got under there grabbed the pipe b4 an after the cat and shook it like hell, (also try up an down)
and sure enough it was the rattle
word of advice, if it is also your cat
replace it with a high flow
you stick a str8 pipe and you'll lose trq. MPG's and not to mention the sh*t it will pump out into the air, i put a thunderbolt (high flow cat)
gave me better low end trq then it ever had...
best of luck and give us some updates...
