Message: What's the culprit that would cause a power increase @ 3000rpm ( regardless of the gear it's in, you can feel it )
Under 3000, it feels a little sluggish, the throttle response from idle seems like it needs to be awakened. I'm currently running a straight pipe where the cat was, but that hasn't changed the performance issue.
At a cold start, the engine sounds like it's misfiring until it gets a chance to run for a couple of seconds ( kinda like what you sound like when you wake up, before you get a chance to clear your throat ).
Spark plug wires?

Message: at 2500 to 3000 rpm the timing advances and
more fuel is added the computer does this
Also the stock cam reaches peak torque at 3200
A jet 2 chip will enhance this its timing adv
comes in at 2500rpm it will also help throttle
respose and low end torque
give it a good tune up
cap, rotor good wires and plugs like the NGK
Vpower FR4 stock 1 colder FR5
do the crank sensor mod it will also help low
end response
The computers don't get to agresive untill
2500rpm or half throttle or more

Message: Just seems odd that I suddenly get a surge of power @ 3000rpm. It feels like the mixture suddenly goes lean on me or something. I know the check engine light has something to do with it, but I'm not sure what exactly would cause it to behave this way.
The check engine light is on ALL of the time, from start up from cold to shut down. I'm now aware of how the OBD2 Dodge computers work, but I know that when a sensor goes out of range, it will trip the light until it goes back into range, or will stay on if there is a true fault with a component.
Wish I had the printouts from Autozone handy...I know one was the front O2 sensor, but I know that shouldn't trip a code until the sensor heats up...
I can't remember if the other code was for the IAT or the IAC.

Message: if the sensor is bad the light will come on
as soon as it starts it don't need to warm up
where did you get that from its crap
If the light is on all the time its easy to find
the problem
what year is the truck
key on key off 3 times than on watch the light
it will flash codes depending on year
1 pause 2 this is 12 start of diagnostics
5 pause 5 this is 55 end
any inbetween are the trouble codes
some years this did not work get a free scan
from auto zone and replace the bad sensor

Message: It's a 97.
Where I got it from? My 1989 GMC. If I floored it, the rods would knock so bad that it would set a trouble code for the knock sensor that would trip the check engine light for a while and then go off once the system stopped seeing the knock sensor going haywire.
When the O2 sensor literally broke in the exhaust pipe from age, it set the check engine light off and kept it on until I replaced it.

Message: the crank sensor mod betters the low end so from idle on??? Does anyone have photos of how that is done or can explain it further?

Message: the CPS mod should help from idle up. it advances the initial timing. here is a good write up on how to.

Message: it might not better it but it won't be worse. more timing means more power. you can also get a little more fuel and timing advance from the IAT(inlet air temp) sensor mod. but too much advance can lead to pinging. that's not good. i think dodge put more timing in the programming for the trucks with manual trans. i tried the IAT mod in my truck and all i got was lower mileage. i did the crank sensor mod and found a little more power.

Message: you could still try the IAT mod. some have claimed better performance and mileage from it. the good thing is, if you don't like it, it's really easy to put it back were it was. like i said maybe it's a manual tranny thing. i think it's the same for the Superchips tuner. the auto trans guys claim it works wonders but you don't hear that much from the guys with sticks. if i had 300 bucks to spare i'd get the Superchips tuner.
