Hey Larry,
My '00 3.9L (89k) is making a strange noise from the front of the motor. it's like a scraping/rattling noise that happens when reving the motor, not at idle. I found that the belt tenioner was bad and replaced it. Thinking that I fixed the problem I hopped in and pulled out of the drive-way, and damn it's still there. Now I'm stumped. When I was first looking for the problem, I took the belt off and ran the motor= no noise. When I put the belt back on that's when i discovered the belt tenioner was not lined-up/crooked. I ran out of light and it's getting cold, so I figured I get online and ask if you have any clue.

Thanks Again,,

I'm not larry...I can't even come close, but here it goes...

Take the belt off and turn each accessory by hand (alternator, fan (water pump), a/c clutch, power steering, idler pulley). Listen for unusual noise, stiffness or loose pulley. If your belt is continuously misaligned, make sure your harmonic balancer is torqued to spec.

you should hear my tensioner it rattles pings and
makes all kinds of weird noises LOL

As stevedak said try all with belt off there is
another idler pully about dead center on motor
a smoth pully that rides on back of belt check
this one

From auto value made by dayco the pully for
tensioner is $19.95 the other idler is $29.95

Mine has 117,600 miles on it now on my 4x4
wandered what was rattling when I put my new 8207
coil on and relocated it to the fender well next
to the 6a box was idling and just put my finger
on the tensioner man its bad felt like a hammer
was hitting it this just started about a month ago
I guess its time

At least you know its nothing serious with the motor

The tensioner must move back and forth freely

I have to order 1 myself next week they have none
in stock
