Subject: 02 sensors and cat convertor IP: Logged
Message: This is a little off topic for the Dakota forum but I think someone here may have the answer to my question. My friend has a 1999 Ram with the 5.9 and the cat convertor is plugged. He is going to replace it with a straight pipe. It has an 02 sensor before the cat. and one after the cat. Will the "check engine" light come on without the cat in between the 02 sensors? Where we live it is no problem with emissions and such as they do not test vehicles here for that. Some say it will throw a code and others say not. I believe you can purchase a "cheater" device that you can plug in to the rearward 02 sensor to fool the computer that it is still there and working. Anyone hear of this situation?

Message: Yes it will trip a code.
As for ways to fake it they vary but only an O2 sim has been known to work dependably.
Besides that he may still be under emmissions warranty or what ever its called and could get a free new cat out of it.
I think its an 8 year 80,000 miles government warrenty on emmissions components such as the cat.

And yeah, the warranty is indeed 8 yrs/80,000 miles...so if he's got under 80,000 miles, take it into a dealership and have it fixed the right way for freeeee.
...and that "cheater" device is the O2 sim ES mentioned. They run almost as much as a new cat unless he has enough electrical knowledge (or can find the plans somewhere) to make one himself. I've heard they're easy to make...but never seen any diagrams on how they're made.

Message: Thank you! I knew this was the right place to ask. He has over 80,000 miles so its all his expense now. I suggested a high flow cat and a dynomax muffler since it has to be re-done anyways.

Message: You know i did look up how to build one a few years ago. Not sure if the info is accurate or if it even works so do it at your own risk.

Message: The computer was tuned to run with the cat and
you will lose performance without the cat it
throws the air fuel mixture off
The high flow cats can be had for under $100
truckperformance.com
The best thing to do here is replace both o2's
ngk.com ngk ntk same as fsctory and the cat
you will be very happy you did better perf and
gas mileage
