I have a 96 dakota with 3.9l 2 wheel drive auto. The problem is that sometimes when driving it will die. Sometimes it will start back up and sometimes not. I have had it at a few shop and no one can figure it out, it never dies on them. One guy found on his computer he pluged in that it was going into "automatic shut down" but it didnt tell hel why it was doing that. We repalced the fuse and the 5 prong circit breaker. But still no luck. It will do it when its cold out or hot, there is no certain time it does, just when ever it feels like it. I havent had a chance to check for spark when it dies, by the time i get my tools out, it starts back up. It has new crank sensor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Any help would be great.

May not be your answer but I had this happen once on a mail jeep I bought. It was the ignition module. As a rule they just stop working in the snap of a finger. mine ws the only one I ever heard of doing this. Might be why they can't locate it. Just a posibility

So many problems .... So little time

I checked the wiring and its in perfect condition. But while I was working on it I was messing with the wiring by the computer, and it died. I cranked on it for a few seconds, and nothing, so I checked spark and fuel pressure both were good. I continued to try and restart the engine. I finally unhooked the positive cable for a few min. Then tried it again and it spit and sputter and finally started. I think maybe it loaded up on fuel, thats why it didnt start. My mechanic is leaning towards the ecm. So I have one on order, so I hope thats the problem...

Did you resolder that splice? On my old 95, it had a little green corrosion, looked fine. I resoldered it and worked like a champ. Looks can be deceiving.

Also, could be ground at the PCM, I think pins 11 and 12. When you start the truck, tap on the PCM with a screwdriver or wrench slightly, does it cut out? die? If so, you have a grounding issue. I used 5 minute epoxy on mine. I held multimeter in place testing it while wife epoxied the wire.

I used my multimeter more trying to find my issue (random stalling and dying) in a week than I used it in the 4 previous years I owned it.

I didnt solder it agian, I wrapped it back up. As for tapping on the computer I have done that, and the only thing that happened is that it started sending out code to the scanner tool, like coil bad and fuel pump bad, but the whole time the truck was running. So thats why he said to buy a new computer. Thanks for all the help on this matter. Keep the ideas comming!!!!!

Does it die when you slow to a stop? My 93 did when the Hall Effect pickup went bad in the distributor. Would do it randomly after the engine warmed up but would always restart right away.
