Last night the oil pressure guage on my '01 Dakota (40K miles) dropped to nada and the engine started ticking. This was at highway speed. I was almost home so I kept driving.

Today it's the same - no pressure and ticking. The dipstick level is fine.

Any suggestions?

hookup a mechanical gage and see if you have any oil pressure. Disconnect the coil wire or disable the ignition so it won't start, remove spark plugs. Turn key and see if you have any pressure. If no pressure, check for broken oil pump shaft or faulty oil pump or clogged screen.

Thanks to all who offered advice and suggestions. To the good folks at J and J Auto, good call on the collapsed filter. I don't think it was collapsed, but it was really sludged up big time.

This morning I drained the oil, replaced the filter, and filled the crankcase with two quarts of 10W40, two quarts of Rislone, and a pint of Miracle Oil. The ticking is gone, and there is oil pressure registering on the guage. It's still a bit low, but that's probably because of the viscosity of the mixture. Tomorrow I'll drive it slowly around the block a few times and then drain it again and refill it with new oil. If I get any indication that it's not completely right, I'll take it in to have the pan dropped and cleaned. I'm too old and it's too cold in Indiana for me to be lying on the driveway long enough to do it myself.

Thanks again to all the experts out there!
