Hello, I have an intermittent engine problem with my -02 Dakota 3.9 V6, 50,000 miles.
Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.

Every other day when I start up, the engine will run rough at idle and missfire during acceleration. It will keep doing this for the duration of that drive, no matter what the temperature is. Then, I found out that the problem can be solved by turning off the engine and starting up again. Then it runs normal. I never get a check engine light and the dealer have scanned the computer and found no error codes.
Today I talked to an Advanceauto parts store. They said that they have a scanner, but it will not detect anything unless the check engine light is on. I was hoping that this intermittent problem stored some kind of 'soft' code in the computer, but this is not the case according to the parts store.

Do I have a lemon on my hand, or is there some kind of logical sequence of trying to fix this problem? What kind of computer/sensor problem could it be, that always fixes itself by turning the motor off and back on?

I really like the car otherwise!

posible map sensor problem

They read baro presure at start up if you are
going threw mountains and it begains to run bad
just pull over shut down and restart

it only reads this at start and will stay the
same untill a restart

A coil will also do this

That is exactly what my 95 did rough idle cold
starts and cut out at 60 while crusing than 1
day would not start at all

Sensors can become lazy and not work right but
they will not always trip a code

I have not even heard of a MAP sensor untill now. I also found it in my Haynes service book. I will check it out today.

MY 2000 DAKOTA DID ABOUT THE SAME THING EXCEPT MINE WAS A LITTLE MORE INTERMITENT, IT WOULD DO IT SOMETIMES AT STOP LIGHTS, WARM STARTS AND SOMETIMES IT WOULD JUST CLEAR UP. I DIDN'T GET ANY CODES FOR THE LONGEST TIME, IN THE MEAN TIME I REPLACED THE IAC MOTOR, IAT SENSOR, PLUGS CAP ROTOR, INJECTOR CLEANER. FINALLY ONE FINE DAY IT THREW ME A CODE FOR THE UPSTREAM O2 SENSOR, AND THAT FIXED IT. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Is it possible that the plenum/belly pan gasket is going bad?

Is this a cold start problem in general? The reason I ask is up until today ( relatively cold this morning- it's minnesota in December afterall! ) I would start, run a little rough but clear itself up with a little throttle.

This morning, it started pretty hard, and wouldn't stay running unless I opened up the throttle a little and held it there for a few seconds. After that, it ran fine. Started up fine after work too, but when I got home, it sat for 45 minutes and then was lazy to stay running again.

I know I need to replace the O2 sensor, that just became top priority, but the cold start not running thing has me wondering what exactly is causing it to not continue running for the first 10-30 seconds on its own volition.

I can only assume it's got to do with something that controls the fuel. O2 sensor is first, but what would be the most likely culprit after that?
