for xmas i had my parents get me an Airaid Intake for my '98 dak because it was a lot cheaper than the cold air (or atleast i thought it would be). now i realize that i should've gone cold air to get better results. my question is about making a heat shield to go around my filter. Could i make a heat shield out of a sheet of ABS and get similar results? is that the only difference between a cold air intake and my intake? the reason that i wish to do this is because i'm going to order the IAT adjuster today and wish to get the coldest air possible to this and i only want to locate the adjuster in the intake. thank you for your time and for answering everyone's questions about their dak!!!

thanks,
brian

well, I'm not bernd but I can answer your questions. As far as you air raid intake goes it is considered a "cold air intake". A heat shield would really not help out, may actually hinder air flow into the filter. Once your truck is moving the engine compartment is being flooded with cold air. This air is what is going into the filter. A heat shield would kepp hot air off the filter when you are parked or sitting in traffic, but why do you need the extra horse power when you are parked? The name of the game is to get as much cold air into the motor as possible. To best idea out there if you are really concerend with cold air is to get the filter out of the engine compartment, but this is not very practicle in most cases. As far as Bernds IAT adjuster it actually replaces the IAT sensor. It is a potentiometer and resister that wire into the IAT harness to give the pcm a false IAT value. Thus the iat sensore just acts as a plug in the intake manifold. You are only concerned with getting cold air over the IAT sensor if you were to relocate it to the air tube or fender well, the IAT boxes does away with the need for this.

i have the same air intake.....and i have noticed a big difference espicallyduring the winter. but it works good during the summer too. it was the cheapiest intake and it looks the best being crome. and what are you talking about it not being a cold air intake?

i've got it figured out now n8, i thought that it wasn't a cold air because it didn't have heat shield and the filter keeps getting extremely hot(but i'll stop assuming things now...hehe) i just removed the rubber flap today and noticed an even bigger gain!!! i'm gradually learning :) thanks anyway

brian

Directly in front of the installed Airaid should be a plastic/rubber shield across the front of the truck. Right next to the radiator, I believe it had a notch in it for a hose or something...

Anyway...

Remove it. Once done you'll be able to look through the grill at the K&N, and it allows more air-flow into the engine compartment. Don't know if it helped any, but more air-flow is good air flow.
