Subject: Timing Chain IP: Logged
Message: If my timing chain was bad is it going to make that annoying rattling noise all the time or just under load? When I keep it easy I don't really hear the rattling noise but if I step on it then it gets pretty loud. If I ease into it though it doens't really do it. Could this be something different? I have almost 118k on my truck so it's not a surprise that thing has slacked off. Any help would be great. Also I checked autozone and I think they just sell the timing chain only. I need to get the sprockets too right?

Message: It could be the chain. I just put one in a 2.5 at work and it only has 120k. The sprockets were pretty wore. It would be a good idea to just get a set.

Message: Water pump gasket, front crank seal, timing cover gasket. Some kits come with all ness. gaskets. When was the last time you did a water pump. If been a while i would do it while you have it off. if you decide to change it get a new one not a rebuilt. I have a lot of experience with rebuilt stuff at the shop i work at and we try to always get the customer to buy new. the rebuilt always goes out soon. less than one yr usually.

Message: EDDIE is right. Stay away from rebuilt and water pumps are the worst. In my shop they had 2 choices. Go new with warrenty or go rebuild with no warrenty . this also ment no labor to do it again. Cluch plates are just as bad. They get overheated when they go out. People just don't get it. Doing so crystalizes the metal fingers and the center will break out.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Thanks for the info. About how long of a project is this? I read larry's step by step and went 4 hours but about how long do you think it would take for someone with "ok" knowledge? I'm stuck on base for Vet's day and Turkey day so I'm thinking one of those weekends will be fine. I'm allowing for extra time incase something goes wrong.

Message: Yes same tensioner
You do not have to index the cam that is for
the total gear head
4 to 6 hours a nice sat or sunday job
If you get the mopar performance roller chain
which I do not recomend because we have found
them to be off up to 4 degrees
Any chain other than that will work fine and
either roller or silent link chain will work
with the tensioner
besides the 3.9 chain problem rattling the tensioner is also used in circle track racing
you must remove the 1 idler pully there is a bolt
hid behind it not the belt tensioner but the
other idler almost right dead center you will
see it a smoth pully

Message: Good advice to go with a new pump. Also get a new bypass hose - they likely won't include it with the pump. You want to replace it now as an option, not later out of necessity.
