Subject: Check Engine Light
IP: Logged

Message:
I installed my V-8 throttle body on Saturday, and since then my check engine light has come on 3 times, once on sunday, and twice today!!! Is this a problem, or should i just keep resetting this in hopes that it'll just go away after a while? I've put about 200 miles on since i've installed it, today it came on so i reset it, and 3 miles down the road it came on again. i've never had any troubles out of my dak that's why i'm curious. any and all help is much appreciated.

thanks,
brian

now, i haven't made the modification myself, but it appears that your problems are coming from a faulty or improperly installed sensor. you may be getting too much wattage from the TPS sensor or something else. i would check over all the devices that connect to the TB before you go out and pull the TB from the truck. oh, btw, how is it running? have u lost any bottom end power? and what rear-end do u have on it?

right now i'm idling around 1000 rpms but the low has shown a rediculous gain from before the mod install. the higher rpms are so sensitive to the mod as well. i've still got the stock rear end, not exactly sure what it is (3.55 i'm guessing, but i really have little clue, i'll check it out)
i'll check everything that i can, but i know little bout checking the wattage to the sensors, if you can tell me how, i'd really appreciate it.

thanks,
brian

I have the check engine light too... been coming on ever since the TB mod. I put in a TB off of a '99 Ram 360.I have reset the comp many times. I used the TPS sensor that came with the TB, b/c i broke my one for the V6 TB on accicdent. I checked the wattage and it is at .76. I have been going crazy trying to find out what that light could be... it runs ok otherwise, but it ran better with the V6 TPS. I might try to get a new sensor sometime soon. Im gonna try and reseat my injectors that I installed, with new o-rings, so i can be sure it is not those things.

I dont know what else to do about it.... Bernd... please help, man!!

They dont know what that code means... something about a leak in a air pressure in the fuel system. At first they thought the gas cap was not holding in the pressure, but that didnt fix it... so it must be a air leak at the injectors.

Sounds like it might have been a code "31"

If so you better get you a HAYNES Repair manual because that code covers a lot of things in the fuel system.

Gas cap would have been the first thing to check/replace

I have a Haynes manual, and I dont exactly know the number on the code, but I will look into the 31 code. It had something to do with fuel system not being air tight. I might go back to them and get the exact number and error code description so I can try to fix it. I didnt know the Haynes manuals had the codes that are read by ODBII scanners, I thought they only told about the computer code that the system gives when you code check on the dash.

Texas97,
check the vaccum caps on both sides of the intake manifolds, dodge used too big of vaccum caps and for some reason, as soon as i put my throttle body on and started the truck up, i looked under the hood (after bernd told me to check it...smart guy) and it was missing, it was the one on the passenger side, about the same level as the IAT sensor, the dodge dealership just gave me a new one, i put it on, retset the computer, and it was fixed

let me know if this works
Good luck,
Brian

on my 92' all im supposed to do to reset the check engine light and clear out the codes, is turn the the ignition from off to the "on" position 5 times consecutively. as for the maintenece required light, the dealership has to turn that off, all that involves is being plugged in and they push a button on whatever its plugged into and it goes off... its like the thing triggers at so many miles or something...

how can you have a 2 didgit code on a 98 with OBDII diagnostics.
im welling to bet that the map sensor is causeing the problem because the bigger throttle venturi's allow more air and the engine may be losing a little more vacum when starting out, thus tripping the sensor and leading the PCM to believe there is a problem.
the high idle issue is probably a vacum leak at the throttle body itself. the very fine machined surface wont seal as well as a honed surface. most TB work ive dont ,i used permatex aviation gasket sealer just for that reason.

but untill then has anybody tried to check if there is a difference between the map sensor on a 3.9 to the ones on the V-8's

I came to a stop, then started to take off when my
1999 Dakota started to bog down then the Check Engine
light came on. It did this one more time on the way
home. I know its the transmission not going back
into 1st gear when slowing down. Now, it has not
done it since then but the check engine light stays
on. How do you get the code? And where can I get
the list for what the codes are? I disconnected the
battery but the Check Engine light comes when the
truck shifts into second gear. Help. Thanks!

Here's an interesting story, and solution to the engine light issue. I have a 2001 Dakota, my wife a 99 Intrepid, both Chrysler. On the same day, we both get the check engine icon.(I wonder if Chrysler activates these by satellite!) What I did for BOTH vehicles is turn the ignition ON,OFF,ON,OFF,ON.. to display the codes. Be sure the total vehicle mileage is showing digitally before this. Wait 1-2 seconds and a "P" followed by 0 and three digits will show up. After the first code, wait a second or two and if needed, more codes will display. After all codes have been displayed DONE will appear. If a gas cap was loose etc, you'll see codes 0442,0443,0455,0456. Don't do as I did and go to the dealer to clear the codes. It cost me $76 hard earned dollars! Unhook your NEGATIVE side of the battery for at least 15 seconds. While unhooked, turn your ignition to the ON position for about 10 seconds to clear any stray voltage from the computer. I found out about the codes at WWW.PTcruiser.com/computer-codes.html They have all of the OBDC II codes. Watch that gas cap...Those damn dealers. Good luck!

I have had this problem as well with the check engine light being on, I've done everything from going back to stock air system to re-setting it with the whole battery deal and all that stuff. Well I got a friend that works a dealership and he said "Yea we've been having a lot of these problems latly." It was the gas cap. If you take your cap and look in the center where the Emmision Control Valve or vent, there will be a rust or a rust color. Meaning that it's not creating a true pressure vacume in your tank. Every time you put gas in a you close your cap it creates pressure in your tank, and this is why it wasn't doing that. He just ordered me another cap and it went right off. Shouldn't charge you anything becasue I think it was a un-listed re-call.

Keep it low and slow

The only way to get the light off on OBDII is to hook it to a tester. I bought a tester at Pep-Boys for about $150. and it has already paid for itself by not having to go to the dealer. You can also get some money back by checking all your buddies cars or trucks that have OBDII, I believe it's from 96up. Disconnecting the battery OBDII won't shut the light off. Hope this helps

That's incorrect, postman. With the truck off, just unplug the back connector from the computer and leave if off for a minute. This will reset the light but it will come back on if the problem has not been corrected.

I have to reset mine every 5 months of so for some mysterious problem that trips the MIL but doesn't set a code. The truck actually runs better after doing this.

Mr Hanky, if you have to reset your comp every five months, don't you think you have a problem? Hook the OBDII tester up to get the code. A book comes with the tester to decipher the codes. Also thanks for the tip about disconnecting the comp plug. The dealer told me you could only clear it by hooking up. But they wanted $75.00 just to check it. I have already got my money back on mine by testing other vehicles.
