Subject: Control Arm Bushings IP: Logged
Message: My lower control arm bushings on my bone stock 99 Dakota are squeaking terribly. I can spray some silicon on them and they will get quiet for a while, but the squeaking comes back.
Is this a job for the do-it-yourselfer or should I get a shop to do it. I am mechanically inclined - I restore old Camaros, I just don't know if I want to mess with the control arm bushings or not.
What should I expect to pay to have both the upper and lower control arm bushings replaced (both sides)
Thanks - Shane

Message: Even if you pay to have it removed and lubed, in time it will do it again. I believe the cause of this is lack of movement from driving a long period of time without getting on some bumpy roads to make it move enough to clean the rusty type grit out of it. try driving a dirt road that is bad enough to cause reasonable movement of the sway bar. It should go away for a spell. I have not had this problem so far but I take my boat to a lake all summer long once or twice a week . this trip includes about 5 miles of dirt road one way that is fairly bumpy actualy requiring slow driving in places.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: It can be do-it-yourself if you're not worried about getting in up to your elbows, so to speak. If you don't mind messing with front end stuff, and spending several hours of time, you could save yourself quite a bit of cash. If you have a shop do it, you're looking at at least $400 labor (depending on labor rate) plus about $20-$40 (depending on quality & markup) for a complete set of bushings.

Message: If you have the right tools you dont have to have them pressed in or out. I just use a big hammer and socket. works fine everytime.

Message: go to energy suspension and replace them with
polyurathaine
they also recomend a grease fitting be added
during install
running all poly bushings really tightens up the
front ends and adds control over the squshy rubber
If your going to replace them do it right with
the poly and never do it again
