Subject: Disable A/C when defrosting IP: Logged
Message: Here's a challenge for GEN III experts.
'99, 3.9 - I hear the A/C compressor cycling on and off intermittently when the heater control defrost vents are selected. This I understand is intended for drying the air stream. Great therory but do we really need it? The mag clutch grabs in and out and the idle varies up and down. This just seems annoying.
Can I simply open a connector from the HVAC rotory control or under the hood to kill this function?

Message: I just pull the relay during the winter and put it in the "spare" position. It's a good idea to exercise the unit at least once a month.

Message: you can do as N56629 said. if you live in a humid climate as i do you'll need that compressor running though. you have to pull some humidity out of the air at some point.

Message: I cut the wire to the compressor and put a switch in the cab to disable the clutch.

Message: Ah, humidity may be the need. For the season I'll remove the relay. Got to remember to run it a couple times before spring. I think its unnecessary wear popping A/C in and out every 30 seconds.
Thank guys.

Message: Suit yourself. It's meant to keep the A/C seals from drying out and leaking refrigerant. If you'd rather replace them than worry about minor wear, go ahead. My Dakota came from FL, A/C is original R-12, was exercised A LOT, nothing has failed yet.

Message: I agree Bob ....... Used to be your owners manual told you to run your A/C (at least) once a month to lubricate the compresser. This of course was in the days before they got smart enough to make it part of the heating system. The switch idea is by far the best idea if you feel the need to disable it at will.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: I cant speak for winter use...but you will notice a HUGE difference when you disable it during the warmer months, especially on a rainy day. I can have my defrost on full blast on a warm stormy night (my buddy and I stormchase) and if I don't plug my a/c back in...we'll have those windows so fogged up within about 15 minutes that we'll have to pull over and open the windows to clear it out. BTW...there is a green connector that plugs into the evaporator (or is it accumulator?)/whatever the black thing is at the top left corner of your engine bay (when standing in front of the truck, facing the cab). If you unplug that connector, it will disable your compressor. I drive like that a lot since my compressor cycles so much and I haven't had a chance to get my problem fixed.
This the same problem you guys are experiencing?
