Hey guys, I own a 1998 Dodge Dakota with the 3.9 and a 5-speed, 2-wheel drive. Recently I have had problems with it not wanting to start when it is cold. You can give it gas when cranking over and it will start, but if you shut it off and try to start it again it will fire right off. I guess that it loses pressure after sitting for awhile. I replace the whole fuel assembly and that didn't seem to help. What could be causing this? Thanks.

have you checked the idle air control motor. thats what it sounds like whats going on. when you give more throttle to start you are only giving more air. when the idle motor doesnt work it will cause it to have hard start. do you have a check engine light on?

Yes, the check engine light is on. What is that part you are talking about, where is it, and is it fixable?

You need to pull the error code. The jack is under the steering wheel. Some of the retail car stores can loan you a reader. Autozone, Pep Boys.

OBD II Readers or "scan tools" are around $80 but universal to most domestic cars. The code when looked up points to the issue. Guessing is more expensive.

Will a bad IAC cause a constant check engine light? I had my codes pulled a while ago and I had 3 problems, one being a O2 sensor and one being the IAC, the other I forget. pulled the IAC out and cleaned it and the port out with carb cleaner and my idle cleared up some, but I hadn't had any starting issues with it. The only driveability problem I'm having at the moment is a slight lack of power that comes back above 2200rpm...and I do have a bad cat.

Riachard,
The IAC is located directly on the back of the throttle body...if you look at the tb from the top, it's the one that has a little metal "plunger" looking thing poking into a small chamber on the tb.

Mike,
Well, it's obvious it's possible for the IAC to throw a code but I've yet to have a dirty one set off my CEL...so if you're throwing a code for it, I'd be suspecting either it's completely broken (or the connection is messed up somewhere) or something else is causing it to throw that code...I just always know mine's dirty if every time I start my truck, it nearly dies before the idle catches. Or if it nearly dies when switching between gears. lol

By the sounds of it...your problems are relating to your bad cat and possibly the code being thrown for the o2 sensor. If your cat is clogged, it will DEFINITELY cause a loss of power. And if your o2 sensor readings are messed up, it's gonna make your truck run like sh!t trying to correct the messed up air/fuel ratio its reading. I've also heard that when your CEL is on, it makes your truck run in "limp mode"...which is based off set tables in the computer and usually that causes it to run like crap.

The guy who had it before me gutted the cat on it. Now I have heard that this will cause it to run like crap. It runs fine, but just has problems starting. I think that maybe injectors are the cause. We have had problems with injectors before with this truck. I will look at the wires on the throttle body in the morning. Thanks for all the help.

Yeah, that normally would prolly make it run like crap since it's making your o2 readings go nuts...but it shouldn't cause any starting problems. I don't even think your o2 readings are even read by the PCM until the engine reaches operating temperature and goes into "closed loop" operation or something like that. Do you know if the guy who owned it before you put an o2 sim on or is that why it's throwing a code (o2 sensor code).

Personally, I would recommend going to truckperformance.com and buying a Magnaflow/Carsound High-Flow Cat. Then it'll be legal and it'll still be flowing better than an oem cat converter.

Also...someone (daddio I think) brought up a good point in a similar post. Have you checked your battery recently? A low battery will cause idle problems...and the colder it is outside, the weaker your battery is...so the problems will be a lot more obvious when it's cold. That would also explain why after it's been running, you don't have any problems...your battery has been recharged enough to remember the idle settings the next time you start it. But after sitting overnight, it may lose that charge and the idle settings will reset again.

Josh, has some good advice there. first you need to take care of whatever problems are tripping the CEL. probably need the new cat and O2 sensors. before buying the O2 sensors you should check the ones in there now. if you have a Haynes or Factory service manual, they tell you how to check the O2 with just a digital voltmeter. it's not hard at all.

and it wouldn't hurt to have the battery load tested.

i always suggest that anyone just starting to do their own vehicle maintenance buy at least a Haynes repair manual. New at your local parts store they are only about 20 bucks. and they are a greeat reference for the day to day maintenance stuff and some troubleshooting.

you could also have a bad relay in the power dist
box under the hood

using the A/C relay switch it with, fuel try it
than ASD try it they are all the same 30 amp
relays

if that solves the start prob get 1 new 1 and
put it in

Get a new cat and go to ngk.com and get 2 new o2
sensors and stop fooling around this will make
it run great

Get the IAC from chrysler we have had lots of
junk IACs from autozone and other parts stores
they did not read right and yes the o2 or the
iac either will throw codes instantly if bad
and light the MIL malfunction indicater lamp

spend the money its worth peice of mind and a
good running truck

Well, I ended up replacing the IAC today. It still has problems. I will move on to the battery, though I do not think that it is that. It turns over fine, just doesn't want to start. If you turn the key on and let the fuel pressure build up then turn it off and turn it back on and fire it up it will run right. It seems like that also sometimes it will not idle down when I push the clutch in. It might take it a little bit. I will also look at the injectors.

I still have problems with this. Even after changing the IAC, twice. I replaced it with one from Napa then one from Mopar. Nothing different. I am still stuck in a loop here. I will try the relay thing in the morning.

i would say the fuel pump is bleeding off pressure. Its a postive displacement pump so it means its worn out. It should still run fine just wont put out as much pressure might find if u punch it on the highway it falls on its face. Cant supply that much fuel anymore
And its in the funnest possible spot inside the tank

If you read. I replaced it with a complete fuel assembly and it did not help it. It is not pulling any codes. It runs great down the highway. It is just that if you let it set for about 5-8 hours after running for awhile it will not start unless you hold the throttle open and then it still takes awhile. If you let it set over night then it does not have any problems starting.
