I have been having problem like others with my 3.9 stalling after going into gear. The truck will idle until the tank runs out unless you change into a gear. I cleaned the IAS as many on this site advised but it didn't help. I went to the dealer yesterday and bought a new one. The new one dosen't help either. When i went to the dealer they found two on file and I had to come all the way back home and get the vin supposedly to get the right one. Well when I go to install it this morning I notice the old one is a 53030657ab and the one the dealer supplied is a 53030657ac. Is there a diffrence in these two units? I called the dealer and told him and he said they are both the same just made by a diffrent manufacturer probably. I just have a hard time trusting dealers and the information they provide. Yesterday it was imperitive that I drive 30 miles back home to get the vin and today it dosen't matter. Does anyone know if they are the same and what else could cause the stalling? Thanks for any help.

The both have the same number. The only difference is the final letter. Not sure what that designates. There are several different IAC valves but the numbers are very different from each other. I would say that they are interchangable unless the connectors are different.

It's possible that your problem is in the wiring. Remove the valve, leaving it connected, cover the hole, start the engine and see if it moves in and out as you operate the throttle. You can use your old IAC valve to cover the hole.

People behind parts counters don't usually know a damn thing about cars. They are taught how to look up a part in a book or on a computer and that is it. I must say, it is pretty rare to require a vin for a part unless it something unique like the computer.

the letters at the end in most cases determine an updated or redesigned part...

I put the new IAC on and saw very little diffrence. This morning when I started the truck I noticed that I could sit in drive and the rpm would flucuate some and the truck felt like it was going in and out of gear with the flucations. I then started to proceed on down the road and the truck lost alot of power and started to backfire slightly. I continued on and it finally cleared out. I drove another 40 or so miles and it ran great. I am awaiting tomorrow morning to see how it reacts again when it is cold. I just bought this truck for my son who is turning 16 and it is driving me crazy. I don't know weather to shoot myself or the truck LOL. The truck really runs good after it gets good and warm most of the time but acts wierd on startup when it is cold.

There is a diff between obd1 and obd 2

it sounds more like your speed sensor drivers
side of trans 3 wire plug right where the older
transmissions had the spedo cable

the TPS can als cause this when they send a dirty
signal this you can check with a digital volt
meter center wire and ground key on engine off
open and close throttle it should always return
to the same low volts .3 to .8

I looked and my truck has a 2 wire plug going to a plastic looking sensor coming out the bottom of the tail shaft and a metal looking sensor with 3 wires just above the pan on the drivers side. The diagram I found online shows that one just above the pan to be a park/neutral switch. The diagram also shows another called a vehicle speed sensor coming out the side of the tail shaft but my truck does not seem to have this one. I am dealing with a 1998 3.9 2wd reg cab vehicle. I was wondering if the plastic looking one on the bottom of the tail shaft with 2 wires might be it?

this is the diagram I am looking at.

First I would like to say thanks for trying to assist me to everyone. I replaced the plastic looking sensor on the tailshaft it was napa part # TSS100 ech sensor. I really don't think it helped as it has already stalled once since I put installed it. The old one did have some mess on the end I suppose it was metal it wiped right off but looked like black chewing gum.I also noticed that I was a quart low on fluid and corrected that problem also. The main thing I can't get it to stop doing is stalling when going into drive. You can just sit there in drive with foot on brake and it will stall after 30 seconds or so. After it gets good and warm it dosen't seem quite as bad. You can move it from neutral to drive and the rpm will hardly change at all for 10 times then on the eleventh it will pull down to below 500 rpm and stall. The truck is parked on a small incline and when I back out everyday and go from reverse to drive it will stall and it may run fine the rest of the day.Last night my son and wife drove it to the store and they said when they pulled out of our street onto the main hwy it revved way high like it had slipped into neutral then caught and drove fine the remainder of the trip. I am just afraid to turn a new 16 year old driver loose in a truck that stalls at diffrent times as it does not seem safe.

I did not remove the TB from the truck and clean it but did spray cleaner into the seat for the IAS and cleaned it with a rag. Yesterday I had the airhat off and was looking down into the Tb and watching the IAC work as my wife shifted from neutral to drive and it would open up and suck really hard at times but did seem to be working as I could watch it move in and out. I am not that familiar with Throttle bodies is there something I am missing? Should I remove it and clean it well? Does it have passages that may be clogged? Thanks for any advice Sonny B

Sonny B, I see this thread is quite old, but on the off chance you're still checking it, I'm having the same problem with a 2002 3.9L Reg. cab Dakota, and I was wondering if you ever figured out what the issue was? It's driving me crazy, as I love most parts of this truck, but am getting pretty annoyed that I'm having all these issues on such a young vehicle. If anyone else is reading this & has any input on the issue, please feel free to chime in...
