Subject: Tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: Here is what my transmission has been doing:
When cruising along on a flat road, at a steady rpm, usually 4th, it will randomly seem like it will try to downshift for like half a second. Just quick enough to feel like the engine skipped or something. But the rpm's jump, so I know it tried to downshift. It doesn't do it all the time, just sometimes - never predictable.
My guess is some electrical B.S., but what specifically - any ideas?
Thanks guys.

Message: Check electrical plug to O/D solenoid at the tranny. Not sure on your year, on the 92s it's at the left rear of the tranny. Also could be at the O/D switch inside, or the computer.

| Governor Solenoid Error? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota 2WD Automatic Transmission V6. My check engine light has been on and I'm told has indicated a Governor Solenoid and Sensor error. So I've had them replaced ($300). But that apparently wasn't the issue, because the light has returned and continues to underperform. My truck starts in high gear, gets poor gas mileage, revs involuntarily when going uphill, and my deceleration button on my cruise control no longer works. On top of that it now has started to cut out altogether when sitting in park idling. It still has the Governor Solenoid Error, but that is all new now. I was quoted at $1950 for a new tranmission, but #1 I'm not sure that's the issue and #2 that's a ton of money for a truck with 64,000 miles that I only paid $6000 for a year ago.
I have no idea what I'm going to do next.

Message: I had the same problem on my 2001. It was caused by a bad Thottle position sensor. When it gets screwed up the TPS sensors tell the computer you are giving more gas which then makes the transmission downshift and act weird. Mine mainly did it at 55-70 mph but the sensor also made the truck shift sloppy from 2nd to 3rd. My check engine light never came on but the sensor had a flat spot in it that made the tranny act up. The sensor is about $35 at any auto part store and is only held by 2 torx screws and takes less than 5 mintues to change out.

Message: What kind of shop are you having service this transmission? They should be able to tell you what is going on that they warrant replacing the tranny. Are they going to refund your money if it isn't the tranny itself but a bad ground or something like that after you've paid for the work on a 'hunch' ? You bet they won't.
I don't know enough about these transmissions to suggest anything in specific, but most electrically governed components have a failsafe mode if the electrics are cut out. It may be possible to try disconnecting the harness at certain solonoids or sensors to rule them out. I'm sure Larry will have some advice if he finds this thread.
I'd be willing to bet that some sensor input is telling the transmission to do one thing when it is supposed to be doing another.
If you have a vacuum tester available, try testing the vacuum of the engine. If your vacuum is screwy, then it will affect your tranny. Commonly, you'll find that you'll pull vacuum on the gauge, then rev the engine and watch the gauge. It should snap the needle pretty quickly. A sluggish needle points to a probable plugged catalytic converter. If the needle is jumping around at idle, you may have other issues like the valvetrain, etc.
That's the first place I would start in diagnosing the tranny. Check the engine.

Message: No offense CJ, but it would be cool to start your own thread instead of taking over this one.
Anywho, I might check into the tps. I put a bigger TB on last fall so perhaps the tps get screwed up in the process.
Thanks for the input guys.

Message: TPS or speed sensor on trans will do that
The map could do it but it must read below 3 lbs
than it will down shift
the sols you can check 200 ohm resistance
180 to 220 normal
I would first check all grounds and connections
drivers side by shift linkage the plug
comp to engine ground behind alt
engine to body back of motor to fire wall

Message: Forgot it may also be your TCC valve
torque converte clutch
Not to often but happens hanging up and droping
in and out of lockup
trans shifts like this
1-2
2-3
3-O/D
O/D- lockup
try a bottle of lube gard red it will help sticky
valves
there is also a redesigned TCC valve made by
sonnax to solve this problem

Message: 97Dakota3.9... sorry for not starting new thread. Thought my issue was similar to yours since my RPMs jump slightly (200rpms) when going uphill.
Thanks for all your advice guys. These Transmission "Specialists" are working on it right now. I'll let you know what they come up with, but I'll pass along your info.

Message: As Larry said, the TPS can cause issues. Last year while driving those small hills on I-10 in FL, my tranny not only came out of lockup, but downshifted to 3rd at the slightest throttle pressure at 65 mph. Never acted like this before. I replaced the TPS and it was fine, has been since.
If yours happens just for a split second, I'd look at the TPS connector first. Have heard reports of the contacts opening up a little. Carefully pinch them down a little so they're tighter on the TPS pins.

Message: Just wanted to let you all know that they couldn't quite pinpoint what malfunctioned for me. But eventually the computer stopped communicating with the scanners so they found me a used one ($50) and replaced the computer altogether and now everything works fine.
I was just lucky they found a used one for $50, because they said a new one would've been over $500.
I just hope this remedy lasts.

Message: Hey, Im having a similar issue with mine. 1998 with 174k miles.
My CEL is on and went and had it scanned for free at Checker auto.
I pulled code P0720- Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction.
I have no idea what that means, but have you tried having your scanned?

Message: I have a 2006 Dodge Dakota and it has the V6 with 114k in
miles. When driving it, it does great for about 10-15 miles.
Then it appears that it will not shift into OD. I took it to the shop
and the mechanic told me that I need a new trans. The
bothers me, as I am a college student and have never had any
problems and or, towed anything with it. Can anyone shed any
light on this subject. I am walking to school and catching rides.
Because I am afraid to drive the truck because I may damage
it further.
Thanks

Message: Overheating tranny will cause your trans to downshift, then back up..Add a secondary cooler..
Cut one trans line to radiator, take the flexible hoses that come with the cooler and position the cooler in front of the radiator or ac condensor, and connect your flexible hoses to the cooler and to the cut steel trans line so that the fluid will
route through the tranny and the cooler and this
will always solve a majority of all trannys that constantly shift up and down on "ALL AUTOMATICS..
EASY JOB, GREAT RESULTS.......

Message: I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota p/u with an AT an 3.7L engine. My daughter was driving the truck one day on a street in town (about 40 mph) and the truck just died so she pulled to the side of the road. The truck would only move in Reverse gear and had to be towed home. The gear shift can be positioned in each gear including Park. When the truck is shifted to Reverse it will back up. When it is shifted to Neutral, it will back up. The truck will not move in any other gear. I am getting a P0700 as well as a P0562 code. Not sure where to go from here.
