I am thinking about purchasing a Dakota v6 quad cab. Probably about 2000 or 2001. I would like opinions please on whether or not there are many lowering kits, body kits, and engine performance parts available for this configuration. Thanks for any responses.

a quad cab v6 is a little underpowered for it's size. other than intake, exhaust, and some valvetrain work, there really isnt many performance parts for the v6's. a v6 regular cab or extended cab does ok with its power and can get anywhere between 15-22 mpg, quad cabs tend to get pretty bad gas mileage. personally, if i were going to get a quad cab, i'd make sure it had a 4.7 at least. either that or get a v6 regular cab or club cab.

It depends what you want to do, there are bolt on engine mods like Intake, Chips, Headers, and Exhaust but remember that you have a little more weight to get moving especially if you get the 4X4 Q.C. That is a pretty heavy truck to move. Iam not saying that its slow but a V8 would be a personal choice for a Q.C. unless you get a 2X4. I think that lowered Q.C's look awesome especially when the wheels are a couple inches away from the fenders. There are truly thousands of things you can do and there really is an endless possibility of what you can come up with. Good Luck.

Why are you thinking engine performnce parts for the 6er when you can just buy the V8 and stock you have more power from the get go then you will ever get out of the six without puting yourself in the poor house. Not to mention the V8 up front well save you money and lots of work.

So many problems .... So little time

The primary reason I was thinking v6 is a combination of time and money. I was looking at either a Ford F150 or its equivalent with other makers or the Dakota. Either way it would be Crew/Quad cab used higher mileage for cost purposes. My brother's car was just totalled by their son in a dui accident. Hence no insurance claim. They are interested in taking over my car payments for my Elantra to allow them to have a pretty new '05 and then I would be able to buy a new vehicle myself. However it all must happen fast and depends on the used market. Thanks for the opinions though and a v8 might be the better option.

I'd have to agree with everyone else. Unless Dodge was getting the kind of power out of the 6 like the Nissan Frontier and Tacoma are getting, I'd stick with the v8 also. You aren't losing much/if any mileage wise and it's only really going to cost you a couple of extra bucks for 2 more plugs and wires for maintenance purposes.

Besides, your resale value will certainly be higher when you go to sell.

I owned a 2001 quad cab v6. I thought it would be easy on gas. I bought it with around 36k miles. I sold it with 70k on it. That pos cost me $2800 in repairs in 28 months of ownership. On a good day I got 12 mpg out of it. I had a chip, cold air, and pulley on it and it was still a turd. 180 hp is way under powered for a 4000 lb truck. If i had to do it all again i would have got the v8 dakota. I bought a brand new toyota tacoma quad cab and have been very happy with it. 236 hp, averages 20 mpg, will smoke the tires for 30 feet from a dead stop. Toyota makes damn good trucks, they are reliable as hell and have very little maintenance cost. I think you would be very happy with a used tacoma.

If you put about $1000 into the motor they run
very well and are economical

We are getting 20mpg + with the full size ram
V6 trucks

the worst part is the intake side

bigger throttle body
1.7 rockers
and remove the restriction by the gasket flange
the power gains are very noticeable and very good

there is like 30 to 40 ponies right here and about
50 60 foot pounds of torque at the wheels from
fixing these bottle necks on the intake side

some of the castings have a 1/4" plus hanging
down in the port so bad the injector spray
actualy hits it and is deflected back into the
manifold its bad

you can shorten the runners and pickup another 15
hp from around 2500 3000rpm on up to redline

I have a 2000 Dakota club cab with the V6. I can tell you that it's not the most refined engine out there. I get about 17mpg, which is about the same that you can get with the modern 4.7L V8 (which has more hp too). You should seriously consider getting the 4.7 V8 because the gas mileage is almost the same, and because you get more power, you should be getting better mileage if you are a non-aggressive driver. As for the performance parts, there are more options for the V8 vs the V6.

I also support Sydak's comments. I too have the CC 4X4 with the V6. After I buying it I was informed that nearly the same mileage is gained with the V8.

Drive both the buggers for a long ride and annoy the salesman. I think the V6 is fine, not a neck snapper, but fine for my tasks. The guy with all the repairs had an unusual story. I've driven out 20K with no problems. Average milage 17-19.

The QC additional weight can't be that much. I pull a trailor and she's fine. Try before you buy.

So it is just coincidence that 90% of the post this message board are about fixing a problem on a dakota ?

DODGE build quality flat out sucks, the posts on this board prove it.

No vehicle is perfect...something will always give with a little wear and tear...but look at peoples problems compared to yours...Look at the average cost it is for the people that are trying to fix their problem...most of them are probably fixable for less than $200 on the expensive side. Now you take it to a shop then it's gonna cost more but that's why people come here. Trying to avoid the shop and fix the problem themselves. I think that if the average person can fix any problem they encounter with their truck then it's a good truck. For those with more experience it's just a little easier. I've put over 18k miles on my truck since I got it and the only problem I encountered was a bad plenum gasket, cap & rotor and an O2 sensor. All fixed by me for less than $100.

The problems I had are all of the same ones that people post on here every day about. transmission, wheel bearings, tps sensor, poor gas mileage, etc The $2800 I spent was all doing the repairs myself except for my transmission problem. Heven forbid what the ownership would have cost me if i had to pay labor for all of those repairs. We are not talking about an old high mileage truck. I bought it when it 3 years old with around 36 k on it. I put 34 k on it in 28 months and in that time I replaced front brakes, rotors, battery, belt, tps sensor, 2 sets of tires , 1 alignment, sparkplugs, cap and rotor, wires, 3 speakers, the transmission crapped out at 50k with the typical sensor problem. When i traded it in, it got about 12 mpg, and needed the other speaker replaced, new o2 snesors, the rear end was starting to whine and the tires which only had 8k on them with a fresh alignment and brand new wheel bearings were once again starting to wear uneven and the exhaust bolts were broke off in the head " another dodge flaw that still happens on the 3.9 due to poor design". I am not hard on any of my vehicles, drive 95% of the time like an old grandpa. I have had numerous vehicles including fords, chevy's, dodge, gmc, and toyota and the dodge was the absolute worse money pit I have ever owned. The chevrolet camaro z28 was the second worst. Heck I had a 1991 gmc sonoma that i bought for $800 back in 1999,It had 224k on it whne I bought it and I drove it for 3 years and 73k and spent a total of $500 in repairs including tires over that time period. I can understand having to do minor repairs on a vehicle, but when you pay $13000 for a truck and then it costs you an extra $100 a month every month for repairs it starts to add up.

Eh so you bought the wrong one. Every make of vehicle has it's bad eggs. NO vehicle is perfect. As for trying to include your tires into it is not dodges fault. If the dakotas desing was that bad they wouldn't have continued on. But they've been around for quite a while...must be doing something right.
