One thing I do know for certain. A lifter that makes noise at startup for a few seconds and pumps up isn't considered defective . Jusr eratating. If you can't get someone to help locate it, I guess you live with it or disasemble the engine, pump them up on the bench and see which one bleeds down. You might be able to remove the rockers and using a push rod see if you can tell which one blead down. It can be done this way if your good enough to tell. If there's another way, I'm not aware of it

So many problems .... So little time

Well, at the very least, they don't make noise all the time, just after they've had a chance to bleed down a bit, that isn't all bad. Just keep your ear on it and if it gets worse, then get in there and figure out which one is the culprit. I would imagine the worst wear you could expect would maybe be some distortion of the pushrod over a long period of time.

I share your frustration though. I know how little one looks at tearing back into a project that takes you pretty deep into the engine, only to have to get back in there and fix something again ( I replaced 3 sets of intake gaskets on my wifes car chasing down a problem ).

Just put a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil in and run it. Most ticking will go away. Best solvent for stuck lifters, does no harm.
