Subject: tranny slip 1 condition only IP: Logged
Message: If I gun while taking a corner from a dead stop or short rolling start, occasionally when it shifts into 2nd ( 3rd? ) I lose my tranny. RPM shoots up like it shifted into neutral. Immediately letting off the gas and getting back on it brings the tranny back online. The tranny was rebuilt/replaced according to the previous ownder 30k ago. I checked the tranny fluid as soon as I could, it smells fine, is clean, but looked a little bubbly on the stick. The level was good, but I'm under the assumption that I'm starving the pump somehow. The strange thing is, it doesn't happen during the corner ( probably because the gear is already engaged ). It happens when it shifts to the next gear.
Any ideas what to look for?

Message: It could be something as simple as the front band being out of adjustment. My buddy's R/T had this crappy 1-2 shift you describe. We adjusted the front band and it went away. It now shifts like it should.
Has the front band ever been adjusted? This is a needed routine maintenace item that too often gets neglected. It's simple to do and necessary for the 42/44/46 trannies. (Which I am guessing your truck has.)

presure sensor and sol
bad 1-2 accumulator valve cheap plastic and crap
rings will blow by and cause soft 1-2 and 2-3 shifts

All these parts can be found at

all redesined and made by sonnax
And a good shift kit will firm this up

Message: Well, here's the thing. It shifts really nice and firm everytime I drive it. Taking off on a hard run from a dead stop, it shifts just like it should and hits the gears nice and hard.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the partially bad catalytic converter. Are these tranny's run off engine vacuum or ??? It's a 1997 with the LSD rear diff.
I've got a persistant check engine light, and 2 broken exhaust manifold bolts to get fixed...I'm just in the middle of replacing the engine in the wifes grand am, so the truck has to be put on hold.
I guess I'm mostly curious if I need to worry about this now, or if it is something that can be taken care of a little later ( y'know...by laying off the lead foot that I have and show some self discipline until I get the tranny looked at ). I don't need a blown tranny in this truck due to negligence, which is why I'm here. The last thing I want to do us muck up a 30k mile tranny.

Message: 97 thats a A500 42RE
Heres what you do when you get around to it
If it only acts up ocasionaly first get the
converter straghtened out
The trans is computer controled by the, load, tps
position, speed and gear what the comp does is
raise the shift points and presure the harder
you step on it
If the pressure sensor or sol is bad it will act
up and just get worse over time
do a fluid and filter change and replace these
2 parts sensor and sol use good fluid
+4
Amsoil
Redline
no cheap super tech or dextron
the parts are dealer only around $200
There is one other thing here if you look in the
lines and find what looks like a filter what it
is, is a check valve these become pluged and stick
shut remove replace or repair this it can kill
your trans bt not letting it flow to cool
I would also check the bands they usualy are ok
even over 100,000 miles I find them to be
within a 1/4 turn normal ware
It don't sound like you have any major probs
just a little tune up you might say
what it sounds like is the sensor is off a little
lowering the line presure and causing the slip
you can also take the pressure adjusting screw up
1 turn this will compensate for any ware and
presure loss and you should be in good shape
I do recomend the Amsoil fluid we have had very
good luck with this fluid I have guys who pound
there transmissions every day and they hold up
very well
You may also want to consider a shift kit on your
97 the TCI 220500 will work great but replace the
1-2 accumulator valve the cheap plastic and crap
rings will leak and cause soft shifts
The heavy duty towing setup works out very well
and will make your trans very strong
you can get the acc valve at transmissionpartsusa
.com $29 direct replacement part
The shift kit also comes with a high flow filter
very fine brass screen not paper and pan & filter
gaskets the filter can be washed and blown out
as long as you do not rip it last forever
tciauto.com $100 fast delivery think there in Ark
I get the kits from them in WI in 2 days very
fast and if you need any tech help you don't
wait an hour maybe 5 min at the most

Message: Mind slipping here
first check all the elect connections be sure
they are clean also the grounds
comp engine ground right behind altonator
engine to body strap back of motor to fire wall
this can also cause an intermitent problem under
load a bad connection
do this befor anything else

Message: Excellent advice...thank you. I am planning on towing with this truck, so the suggested improvements will definetely be done to the tranny.
For now, I'll just baby the truck as it is shifting solid, the fluid level is good, the fluid smells fine and is still a brightish red, not brown or brownish. I'm up in Minnesota ( well, actually across from you ), so it's good to know of a supplier that I can get stuff from with some level of quickness.
I really appreciate the advice on tranny fluid too. My first thought was to use a better fluid than stock if there was a known good one out there. I have a friend that is an Amsoil dealer and he told me that he hadn't had good luck with the tranny fluid in his transmissions ( chevy ). I guess everyones mileage varies. I'm going to start banging away on this truck soon...I've got the engine for my wifes car almost completely ready to go back in by Sunday afternoon. Then, I get to finally rest for a bit, and get back at the car maintenance...namely my truck. Yay!

Message: Its the trans not the Amsoil fluid
We use 3 fluids in the shop
Amsoil
Redline
or the ATF +4
nothing else goes in the dodge O/D transmissions
I have probably over 100 customers running the
Amsoil and never have the probs I see on this
board.
most of the probs are from lack of maintainance
or using junk fluid
I have had people who said there trans was shot
needing rebuild only to find out they used
dextron, supertech from walmart or other cheap
fluids
slipping, hanging up in gears not shifting all
caused by the fluid
The heavy duty towing setup would be just rigt
if you plan on towing but replace the 1-2 acc
you can use one from an old 904 727 alm valve
with steel seal rings better than the plastic
they come with same valve
The Alm valve with new seal rings can be had
from redrider.us $15 plus shipping new alm
The sonnax sure cure kits also fix most of the
customer complaints which are factory blunders
in the first place
I just don't understand why the factory did not
set these trans up a little better they are an
excellent trans with very little work to them
to get them right

Message: I keep wondering the same thing. Dodge has a reputation for bad transmissions ( at least around here they do ). I can't understand it. Are their transmission engineers stupid, the company that builds the transmissions just really lacking in quality control or what?

Message: most of it was just to save money
If you look at the valve body from an old 904 727
you will see the hydrolic part is almost the same
on the new o/d transmissions and a lot of the
parts will interchange springs valves servos all
the same
What they did first was add the lockup and it was
hyd control but they has some issues with this
than they went with the sols and comp lockup
control this solved the prob
Than they added the o/d unit to the rear of the
trans even the pans and gaskets interchange
A500 904
A518 727
The 727 was always known as a very tough trans
the diff from the 904 to 727 was clutch size
mostly 904 6" 727 8" case size and pan otherwise
they were basicly the same
I am running the servo springs front and rear
from a 727 in my truck because I was getting
a small amount of overlap on the 1-2 shift
going into second before 1st was fully released
but this trans is setup to shift a lot faster
than a stock trans
You can set these up so the 1-2 2-3 shift is so
firm and so fast even at 1/4 throttle they will
chirp the tires and snap your neck
o/d can be firmed up by changing the spring
lockup by drilling the plate hole larger no more
than .080 unless you change the seal rings to
the low drag high heat type than you can go
.110 .130 it will learch forward when it locks up
you can also get converters with any stall speed
you want from stock to 3000rpm I am running a
1600 in my 4x4 it had the high stall 1200rpm
stock as most V6 4x4's did most 2 wheel had the
900rpm
you can build these trans anyway you want custom
for what you need
for stock or with all the boltons all that is
really needed is a good shift kit and a few
little parts and they are plenty strong
most of the mopar techs also wonder why they set
them up so sloppy

Message: Truely you are a wealth of information.
I'm not all that worried about chirping the tires, but my main concern is setting up the tranny so it doesn't fail first, and secondly so that it can handle a long distance pull with a 2500lb trailer behind it ( tandem axel with a 17ft boat )

Message: I haven't posted in quite some time. But now have the same problem. I have a 96 dakota 4x4 w/od and the fluid level seems fine? But when I leave for work in the am and turn a corner it slips like hell. I have to let off and baby it to not slip. I have been tight on cash so a tranny rebuild or swap seems far away. Could it be as simple as the bands? or a sensore or switch?

Message: replace the sensor and sol as a pair you can do
this without droping the body out just be sure
the orings go back in right
fluid and filter and it in most cases work great
the bands usualy are fine I grind a mark on the
adjustment screw to see where there at before I
adjust them this gives you a good indication of
what kind of shape there in
Try the lubegard red it helps sticky valves around
