Subject: Dakota 2002 V6 Slowpoke IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 v4 Dakota but wanted more power. I upgraded to a 2002 V6 3.9L Quad cab with Auto, 13K miles. It is gutless and only gets 12mpg. It only performs when going up hill with cruise control. Are there any modifications that will give more HP and GPM while remaining California legal?

Message: Well our v6's aren't power houses. Especially in your case. A QC is the heaviest of the trucks other than I assume your's is 2wd. My 4x4 CC might weigh close to yours. My truck weighs almost 4500lbs and I still manage to get at least 16mpg now and I think it has sufficient power for the v6. If yours is 4x4 (not sure if the V6 QC came with 4wd) your at the bottom. Small engine heavy ass truck. If you do a search on here you'll find plenty of answers for trying to get a few more ponies out of the 3.9 exhaust, roller rockers, intake, superchips and a few other things are going to be your basic answers.

Message: 12mpg doesn't sound right even for a Q-cab. My '99 C-cab with a shell gets 19-22 always. The 3.9 engine isn't a neck snapper but they have reasonable performance.
Pulling a 12'trailor with two MX bikes and a quad strapped up, three adults in the cab and a full tank-o-gas, she pulls fine. Freeway entrance ramps and at 70+ mph. Now, passing a semi, uphill in an on-coming wind might require a little extra room while floored. NOS would be a bonus in these situations.

Message: First thing to do here is pull a spark plug
black to rich
white to lean
tan light sandy color is what you want
sounds to me like you need some new o2 sensors
they will kill power and gas mileage
order direct ngk.com
It should not be that gutless or get that bad of
mileage something is way wrong here
A o2 sensor does not need to work right and still
not trip a code they get lazy lose there range
and you run like crap
That and be sure the cat is not half pluged
