Subject: Truck Runs bad after warming up IP: Logged
Message: I have a 96 dakota 3.9, 5 speed. Only modification is flowmaster exhaust. Has been a good truck. 200k miles. Has had current problem for about 6 months. Runs fine until it warms up, then when driving around under 2000 rpms it starts bucking and stumbling. At higher rpms runs great, no noticible power loss or anything. I havent tried to replace any parts yet. No problem codes and chek engine light doesnt come on. I cant find anything in my repair manual that sounds too promising, was trying to see if anyone else had same problem and what to do to fix

Message: 96 no egr
sounds like you have a sensor out of specs
auto zone free scan
engin temp
in coming air temp
map
o2
dist pickup fuel
crank sensor going bad
in that order check them the last 2 you can not
see them operating with a scanner
check your coil wire sometimes they burn off
right where the end goes on and it will do
this or a bad coil

Message: I appreciate the advice. I will have to get this done when i get a chance. Thank You. Hopefully thats whats wrong, I jus changed the sparkplug wires a few weeks ago so it shouldnt be the coil wire, but you never know these days. It only does it when it warms up.

Message: Double check your plug wires routing.
They should not be near the engine or each other. (as best as can be done)
Is there an exhaust leak causing too much heat in the engine bay?

Message: Got truck scanned no problems so it says. The check engine light only comes on when you turn the key on before it starts. There are no exhaust leaks, It is getting really annoying. Like i said it only does it after the engine gets to normal operating temps, and after the engine gets above 1800-2000 rpms it quits, but feels like your riding a bull below 1800 rpms when driving. Anymore ideas? I would appreciate the help.

Message: I got a code reader, shows P0171 system too lean on bank 1. Could this be my problem. Check engine light does not come on. Ihave looked on the net for the meaning of this code. Found that i could be an 02 sensor. I will check the wiring on them to make sure there not cut or something, changed them out not even a year ago. Also changed the crank sensor out about a month ago and distributor cap and rotor, wires and plugs. i am puzzled because it nly does it after it warms up and has to be below 2000 rpms for it to act up.

Message: I have a 1996 Dakota 3.9L and about 170k miles. I have also been experiencing this same problem. I decided to wait and let the engine stall, this took a few minutes but eventually it gave me a P0320 code. I am going to look at my dist. pick up, and my O2, and my Crankshaft positioning sensors to see if there is a prob there first. The code says a malfunction exists in the circuit for the engine speed input. Let me know what you found to be the problem for your truck, and good luck. Thanks, David

Message: go to ngk.com and get a new o2 sensor
or both the pre cat controls the fuel and is the
the most important sensor there
the post cat just tells the comp that the cat is
working but will effect throttle responce also
a lazy or bad o2 will not always trip a code or
show bad with a scanner
replace the dam things and be happy no junk
bosch sensors we had lots of problems with them
Also you plugs should be a light tan sandy color
if not something is wrong don't listen to an
idiot dealer who had also told my customers they
just run lean and will not turn tan that is pure
bull$hit
They Need To Be Tan Color
o2 is recomended to be replaced 60 to 80,000
miles they begain to get lazy and can go either
way rich black plugs poor mileage and perf
lean gas mileage will stay about the same plugs
white as a ghost and poor perf

Message: I replaced both the before and after cat o2 sensors and there was no change. The truck still runs rough almost to the point of stalling after the engine is at normal operating temp, and rpm is 1500 and under. If I let it go long enough it will eventually stall. I have yet to try the engine temp sensor. I hate buying all these parts on a guess basis. o2's were around $70 each. Any more thoughts on this are appreciated.

Message: well if you can find the info you can check the engine temp sensor before you change it. there should be a scale somewhere that will show you what the ohm reading from the sensor should be at a certain temp.

Message: hey, i just bought a 1998 dodge dakota,
3.9L ---5 speed.
373,000 miles.
i have your exact same problem only worse!
i just replaced the crank speed sensor thinking that was the
problem for sure, but to no avail.
for me it will idle sometimes and starts sputtering and loosing
spark in 5th gear, i used to be able to either floor it or let off the
gas completely and it would "fix" itself.
now it only stays running when it's cold OR, if it's hot i have to
keep her around 3000 rpms or higher to keep her alive.
if it drops below that it dies and will not start until it cools down
again.
my next choices are either the computer itself, or the pick-up
coil (cam sensor)
good luck bud, i'm pullin' for ya!

Message: I have changed everything you can think of that would cause
a fuel issues like around $3500 and I remembered when my
converter went out the heat couldn't escape and burnt my
valves so compression test is easy to do and rule it out at
least

pressure, the electrical wires, both 02 sensors to ngk.

Message: Yes I did change ect sensor and it started off throwing a
p0171 and over the last week its throwing p0300 p0301
p0303 p0305. The p0171 started right after I changed the
fuel pump when the converter messed up which was my
fault I knocked a whole through its guts and it crumbled and
the excessive heat burnt my valves. The BS is its a brand
new engine with maybe 10,000 miles and I screwed it up

Message: Well compression test was good so I've got that out
of the way I'm confused now I've done everything
that I know to do. Could the distributor cap be crappy
even though its new? I've tested the injector wires
and they get signal but its like they work sometime
and sometimes not.

Message: Has anyone ever seen a truck Rev up when u pump the
brakes? My 95 silverado did that when I stepped on the
brakes but it had a Gen 1 ecu an none of the sensors that
my 98 Dakota has. The brake booster seal can leak causing a
vacuum leak
