2 Related problems?

I have a 92 Dakota V6 w/ 157,000 miles that will start up fine when it's cold but after about 10 minutes of driving, it will (1) want to die if I'm stopped in traffic and idling and (2) will randomly decide to downshift at highway speeds from OD to 4th or 3rd, and then will randomly shift back to the appropriate gear.

If and when it does die, I can crank it for a couple of seconds and then it will start, but I can smell gasoline.

I took it to a shop and they cleared a check engine-light code that was a coolant code. It ran fine for a few days and then started doing it again, with the check-engine light coming on again, randomly.

I think it's something electrical, or maybe that 'famous splice' problem?

Any help would be great!

My 92 V6 just went through the same thing.
Check the fault codes, (turn ignition on-off-on-off-on. DO NOT start.) and watch the check engine light. It should flash a bunch. One code I'll bet is 22. (two flashes. pause, two flashes).
Bad temp sensor. It's on the intake behind the alternator. About $8-$9 at Auto Zoo.

BTW-my 92 has only one sensor, the one wire type.

And AZ cannot check codes on anything older than a 95. I tried, they can only check codes on OBD II models.

Thanks everyone, I will change the temp sensor, and hopefully that will fix it. Then, I guess I will move to checking out the coil.

I already replaced the Idle Air Control, so that wasn't the problem.

Check the fault codes before changing anything.
No sense in replacing things if it's not needed.

You are describing exactly what my truck was doing, though.
