Hi everyone,
Perhaps some of you have seen my posting regarding the knocking noise in my truck.
Well, the mechanic says that the knocking noise is due to a cracked flyweel. I was able to see a few cracks on the flyweel when he put the truck on the lift and I am 90 %sure that the noise is coming from there, so I guess this time I am going to give the mechanic the benefit of the doubt and believe he is right.
By the way the flywheel on my truck is not a solid wheel. What I mean by this is,the flywheel is solid in the middle and then has like a web design to the out side of the wheel and solid again and then the gear that engages with the starter.
I dont know if the flywheel in 1996 Dodge Dakota with Automatic Trans,3.9l trucks is the same as mine or different. I was able to see that the cracks happened on the web design of the flyweel. I was looking online for one but the ones I have seen is a solid wheel and for $400 dollars.
And to make matters worst,my mechanic does not want to remove the transmission until he has the part so that he can do all the job at once, so I am wondering how bad the flywheel really is .(well i guess is really bad since is making so much noise. I am lucky that the flywheel has not broken into fragments)
My problem now is that I am having hard time finding a flywheel. I have called around to junk yards and nobody seems to have it. I was looking online but they say the dont have anything for automatic transmission.
Does anyone know where can I find this part for my truck?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Message: Any junk yard worth there salt should have access to the nation wide hot line for parts. somewhere there is a truck with a flywheel that fits your aplication. they also will have interchange books stating how many years and models will interchange. All needed information to do a good search

Message: Just another question ....
Automatic transmissions have a flex plate or flywheel? I think there is a big difference between the two and that is why I am having hard time finding it.
I have a feeling that I have been looknig for the wrong part(thanks to my mechanic).
Anyways, I called a few places looking for my "flywheel" and they told me that the flywheel only comes with the manual transmissions.
They said that if my truck has an automatic transmission I am,most likely, looking for a flex plate.
I went to google/images and typed flyweel and it gives me pictures of a solid wheel which I believe a flywheel looks like.
I typed flex plate and it gives me similar pictures of what the "flywheel" in my truck looks like.
Can anyone with mechanic experience can help me out here. Do I need a flex plate or a flywheel?

Message: I would buy a used one. Reason. Your going to buy the plate and ring gear seperate. n order to install the ring gear you will need to (my way) put the plate in a freezer for say 2 hours. before removing it, heat the ring gear with a torch. do this nice and even all the way around to prevent warping. Now remove the plate from freezer quickly ans slip the ring gear on. it will slip right on easy. Just be sure it is on streight. Now. If you buy a used one, check the gear teeth all the way around carefully for wear. What most people do not know is an engine stops at the same place most of the time so the gears wear out in that small area sooner. Rickleys beleive it or not lol.

Message: Yes the ring gear is on the TC........Had to file mine as I was replacing the starter. Hard steel, had to take my time...Cleaned up good.
I would think twice about replacing the gear, Lot of work, alignment accuracy a must, plus it is something not done often (by a casual wrench turner).
Anybody else ever replace that gear?

Message: Hi members,
Thanks all for your replies!
When I went to Napa Auto they gave me two parts, the plate and the gear. The guy in Napa told me that I have to weld them together, something Napa Auto can do if my mechanic does not have a clue of what I am talking about. I still looking for a real mechanic before I do removed the transmission and get this problem taking care of.
By the way, I can see that plate craking pretty easily since it does not look very solid.
I keep you posted.

Hi members,
I got my truck fix. Finally! It was the flexplate, which was craked in many places.
I took it to a transmission shop, and they got it right the first time.
I had bought the parts at Napa Auto but the guy there sold me the wrong parts . I did not need the gear, only the plate. But they flexplate he sold me was not even the right part.
The guy at the transmission shop ordered from the dealer and got it done.
PROMBLEM SOLVED !
Thanks everyone for your replies.

rare caused by lose starte dirt or debre in gear
very unusual to replace a ring gear on any car

converter to flex plate LOL
I caled the guy told him to come get his car he
was all upset about buying a trans said how
much $20 for the bolts and labor
he has been a customer since 1978 after that I
