Subject: O2 Sensor

I have 2000 Dakota 3.9. I want to replace the O2 sensor. There are 2 of them, one in front of the cat and one behind. Do I need to replace both of these? The reason for wanting to replace is my gas milage is down and I have 85,000 without replacing these.

Thanks

What I have found on the obd 2 the second or
post cat sensors go bad very often

ngk.com
same as factory NGK NTK at less than half the
price mopar $108 your paying for the box that
says mopar its the same sensor

stay away from the bosch between 10 to 30,000
miles they lean out causing poor perf and ping

Guess I've been lucky. I have 78K miles on a Bosch sensor, and it passes emissions as cleanly as when the vehicle was new, with same gas mileage, and great driveability. I suspect the vehicles that have the most trouble with these have other issues leading to the failure.

I agree with Larry..
Get the NGK ..
I put one on my 95 and getting the best fuel mileage
ever , especially after having a CRAPPY Bosch one on for about 30,000 , which , by the way was responsible for messing up the cat.. Also had to be replaced..

Bobs 4 bangger LOL

The bosch sensors I used to recomend in a stock
truck you are so close to the stock computer
tables its hardly noticeable

The more mods you have the more it will show up

My stroker pinged like a bitch with a new bosch
my 4x4 at 30,000 it leaned out but showed normal
with a scanner but with an ociliscope watching
the wave patern not even close this is how I
figured out all the ping and poor performance
probes that were coming up it was the bosch

new ngk and they all ran perfict

a lazy or slightly bad o2 will not trip a code
and will pass emissions

If you start doing mods and notice no perf
increase, throttle body, 1.7's its probably
the o2 these 2 mods should add 30 RWHP easy

I'm the original owner of my 95 and have all my matenance records. I could not find my O2 sensor ever being changed (165,400 miles). Maybe it was but I don't think so. It never tripped a code and always passed emissions (barely the last time). I changed it yesterday (NGK)and now am interested in how it will affect my gas mileage and performance with my mods. I get 15.5 in the city and 18 mpg on the hwy. Is there a breakin period where things improve after driving. My mods have made improvements in performance but maybe the new O2 sensor is the missing link.

A new O2 sensor will show improvement immediately if the old one was bad. There is no learning curve.

I beg to differ on that one

If the sensor was bad or lazy the fuel maps will
be revamped in the computer adding or subtracting
fuel so the ratio is corect with the new sensor

If all you did was replace the o2 50 miles you
will notice improvements and it will fine tune
over the next 200 miles or so

It must learn new sensor imputs

Just like when you jack up the TPS signal the
first few times you start it wont idle right
than it pics it up

relearning the alterd or changed signals from
just 1 sensor happens prety fast

Thats why a scanner is nice with a moded out motor
relearning from a hard reset takes lomger because
you are farther away from the stock tables with
the scanner you can take out the codes without
doing a hard reset you know the key thing

I just got around to putting my new ngk in my 4x4
when the bosch went I poped the old org sensor
in

After finaly getting my MSD back on it seamed to
run doggie the ability to burn more gas and
make more power does you no good if the gas is
not there it had 85,000 miles on the org and
would read .2 to .8 not good enough for power
and perf

New NGK .1 to 1.04 now thats more like it

You can watch your sensor with a scanner start
cold
4.8 volt
1/2 min 3.8
1/2 min 2.8
1/2 min 1.8
after 2 min .1 to 1.04

This is how it should stack up this was a 40
degree morning

If it stays at 4.8 than all of a sudden starts
to fluctuate its hanging up a lot will do this
than after 2 min its fine

when this happens say you get out of a store
take off and your truck acts like it dont want to
move than all of a suddeen it takes off its the
o2 causing this

This is the most important sensor if the
calibration is off it will never run the right
air fuel ratio poor perf gas mileage and ping
can occur

I have seen sensors last 10,000 miles and I have
seen them run 250,000 miles

In a stock truck you can unplug the sensor and the
truck will trip the light but still run fairly
well from the stock table try this on a moded
motor and it will run like real crap

These V6 motors should have good throttle response
and good off idle low end and pickup at right
around 1800 2000rpm no spit no sputter no lag
or there is something wrong the response should be
better than an old carbd engine
