Subject: Flywheel.. IP: Logged
Message: Hi members,
I found out the flywheel on my truck is crack and making a loud knocking noise .I want to do the job myself and save some "bucks" but I am not sure how hard is going to be.
Has anyone done this job lately?
Can I replace the flywheel without dropping the transmission all the way to the down?
Please let me know what do you think.

Message: sorry, you gotta drop the tranny. how hard it is depends on your skill level.
it's not really that hard. pull the driveshaft, dust cover, take out the torque converter bolts, disconnect all wiring & lines to the tranny, remove trans crossmember then unbolt bellhousing from engine. remove flywheel from crankshaft. reverse for install.
do yourself a favor and buy at least a Haynes repair manual at your local auto parts house.

Message: IF it is a cracked flywheel I sure hope your not driving it. If that flywheel Comes unglued and flys apart, Your in for some serious dammage, some of which may not be repairable.
So many problems .... So little time

I saw the hair-lines cracks when the mechanic put the truck on the lift(he would turn the key just enough to make the flywheel turn). Before that , I could not tell where the knocking sound was coming from but now I realize the noise comes between the engine and the transmission.
I still driving the but I going to stop doing it cause i know if is the flywheel making the noise, sooner or later it is going to break in or worse.

Message: If this is the same mechanic that did the timing chain, I would go to a different guy and get a second opinion. Sounds funny to me.

Message: Yes he is. 94Spt.
In fact I took the truck back there because I thought the knocking noise had to do with the timing chain more than anything else.
I will get a second opinion because all this mess began after he replaced the timing chain.

Message: Go to Sears and buy a mechanics stethescope for $15 or $20.Try to listen to the area around the front cover, if there is a noise in the timing chain you will hear it very clearly. Just be careful of the rotating fan. I have heard many knocks in engines and none have been because of a cracked flywheel.
