Subject: Ram Air? IP: Logged
Message: I have a cold air intake on my 98. Sometimes when I look at it, then think of what its called, I wonder why. why the f*ck is it called a cold air intake if it's suckin up all the air under the warm hood? So I've been thinking of running a hose from maybe just behind the grill, or cutting out the holes in the facia for the fog lights I dont have and put some mesh or something over them and run hoses to my cold air intake and make a box to put around it so its only getting the "cold" air. make sense to anybody? I know if I use the fog lights holes I'd have to worry about deep water launching into my intake. I've thought of putting holes in the hoses I'd be running but I imagine water can still linger up in there.
good or bad, I want all comments
Thanks

Message: Well heres what i got. I had a buddy who had a 91 mustand 5.0 now forgive me i know we are talking about two different vehicles but he did just about the same thing. He never had any issues of water going up the ram air tube he created from something similar to dryer venting however he never went off road with it lol. Just my two cents but it benefited him greatly.
Best of luck.

Message: what you can do is, is do that setup up but but a diaphram on the hose like right after the air filter this will allow only air pass and no water. bing bang boom, no problem. just remamber to clean your filter then. :-D

Message: thanks guys, I'm definetly going to do that then. I'm a lil puzzled about how the diaphram looks. Is there a specific kind that you know of to use?

Message: thats awesome! im not understanding how it works looking at it the angle they show it but I understand what they're talkin about. wish it was a lil cheaper, I'm tryin to do this as cheap as possible. It would prolly pay for itself over time anyways. but thanks for the ideas! i welcome many more!

Message: You get a whopping 5-8 decrease in temperature going from the original location to the side of the radiator. Moving the intake down to the fog light or lower may actually increase your intake temp. The temp just above a paved road can be 20-30 degrees warmer than the area at the stock location. I've places temp sensors in just about every location you can think of and found nothing better than the stock location and the area alongside and in front of the radiator. The only thing I haven't checked and that is air entering from a hood scoop.
As for any "ram air" effect, unless you spend a great deal of time traveling above 80-90 mph, you can forget about any gains.

Message: I have a electronic digital temperature guage that I been mounting on the lower lip of the front bumper on a lot of differant autos for many years. As old as it is this thing is dead on when tested in crushed ice with water. This gives a true 32 degree reading. Even reads in tenthes. depending on how hot the day. you need to be moving as much as 35 MPH to get an accurate air reading this close to PAVEMENT>>>>> When stuck in slow moving heavy traffic, the guage can read 30 plus degrees above real air temp. Remember. You also got to factor in the engine heat at this area. At higher speeds the temp here is right on and the best place to get a real road serface temp watching for freezing wet winter pavement. Can be hard to tell at times in Montana. This is by far the best winter driving safety device I ever bought. Got it at a truck stop. Truckers use these all the time so they can keep there speed up without taking chances. You may be very disapointed looking for cooler engine air in this area.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Thanks, that makes a lot of sense so I prolly won't vent the air from the foglight openings. I know I'm not going to get a "ram air" effect. I'm retarded. I meant "Cold Air" but you got the jist.

Message: Check out Suncoast Ram Air hoods they look awesome and are fully functional. I plan on getting one for my '01 Dak...they're alittle costly though.

Message: forget that like someone said before, the whole ram air effect doesnt matter actually until 120mph whihc the air in that case is being force into the combustion chamber, while the cowl induction you have the whole mph range, so id go with the old cowl induction sytle.

The Cold Air Is There LOL
I have 2 IAT sensors and a DPDT switch in the cab
below 0 I run the stock position above bottom of
cleaner 6" from body at 30 below 0 it will throw
IAT volt codes real fast
The IAT will trow a code anything below 50 degrees
