Subject: Crank Position Mod? IP: Logged
Message: After completing the crankshaft position sensor has anyone experienced pinging? If so what cured this higher grade gas, colder plug, switching back to 195 t-stat or a combination of the above.
Have not had my 03 3.9 for to long but it runs good at this point. It has basic mods right now cold air intake, NGK (stock heat range), brass cap and rotor, 8.5 MSD wires and a flowmaster muffler. Just curious of everyone's experience before I complete this mod. Thanks in advance.

Message: You advanced it too far. Back off a degree or two on the CPS position.

Message: If you are experiencing pinging the primary cause is most likely something other than the cps mod. At one time I had experienced pinging while it was stock. This only happened in the summer. The primary cause seems to have been a leaky plenum gasket. I now run the cps mod along with a superchips program and get no pinging in the 87 octane mode.
While higher octane, colder plugs and 180 stat may help they won't solve the real problem.

Message: Do anything you can to run the timing
If it pings use the 1 colder NGK also opening the
gap .005 more will help
If you live where its not belo 0 a lot the 180
thermo will help other wise use the reg stant
195 they will run 185 188 in these trucks
because the org 195 it came with is of a metered
flow type and will run 195 200
relocate the IAT 6" from the throttle body in
the bottom of air cleaner or tube this will
give you more fuel
You want that timing more power and better gas
mileage
I run a base timing of 14 over factory 10 IAT
relocated and a stage 2 chip with reg 87 fuel
and have no ping at all 22 to 24 mpg with a 4x4
thats hard to beat and its prety quick
I have a perf comp and a ASE chiped comp thats
on my 94 stroker truck running the perf comp
and the premium gas the mileage is the same
slightly better mid and top but the price of
the fuel does not justify running it I am just
as happy with the stock comp and the stage 2 chip
