Subject: 93 3.9L Misfiring IP: Logged
Message: I've been having a problem with my 1993 3.9L Dak misfiring under load.
It has cut out on me twice after running for a while. Then won't start back up for a while.
I replaced fuel flter, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor. Distributor replaced within the last year. Checked ignition coil within the last year, but not recently.
I don't think it is fuel pump because when I jumper the relay it can get the fuel rail up over 30 psi.
Could this be the Oxygen sensor or the crankshaft postition sensor or maybe the ignition coil? Clogged fuel injectors maybe?
Thanks for reading the long post.
Any thoughts???

Message: just wondering how you know that it is misfiring? Is it hard to tell or pretty obvious?
I have a problem right now that might be a misfire. I have replaced all the things you mentioned and no luck. If you have any luck please post.

Message: It sounds like a popping sound, so it's pretty obvious plus a lack of power.
No codes.

Message: Well, I haven't gotten too many responses to this, so I will give it a bump to the top again for consideration.
I have now replaced the oxygen sensor and checked the ignition coil and the resistance on the injectors and it is still occurring. My best guess is the fuel pump, but I don't want to go down that path without having a pretty good idea.
Thoughts any one?
Thanks

Message: You know, I haven't checked the crankshaft position sensor, but since it doesn't do it when sitting still, I am leaning away from that one.
Any body thinking maybe the Throttle Postion Sensor or the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor?
Thanks.

Do a search for splice to find details.

Message: I forgot to mention the splice...
I checked for that last year when it wouldn't start and it turned out to be the camshaft position sensor. The wiring above the driver's side wheel well looks to be in pretty good condition.
Thanks for the thought.
Any other ideas?

Message: I just replaced the MAP sensor and it is still doing it.
Not sure whether I should try any other sensors or not. The throttle position sensor doesn't cost much, so maybe I'll do that just in case.
Any one else's thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Message: Just before dark, watch the engine while running.
Look for arcing in the plug wires.
There is a TB to reroute the wires, but basically you want all the ignition wires away from each other and away from engine parts.
I have aftermarket wires, which are probably a little longer, so I had no problem with placement.

Thanks for the thoughts.
I put in new plug wires and I was careful to route them, but I will re-examine the routes and adjust them to try to provide as much space from each other and the engine as possible.
I am starting to think the fuel pressure regulator might be the culprit, and I think I will try that this evening.

Message: Well, I replaced the fuel pressure regulator with no fix, so I took it to a mechanic and they replaced the fuel pump and I am good to go again. The fuel pump after all. Thanks for everybody's thoughts.
