If he or you are familiar with auto tranny
drop pan and check bands/adjustment.
If not , call local trans shop for repair..

first thing to do is change fluid and filter
add 1 bottle of ube guard red low reverse
band same there is a servo for rev it may be
stuck

good fluid
ATF +4
Amsoil
Redline

no cheap supertech from walmart or dextron

go from there with dirty fluid filter will cause
low pressure and sticky valves

I recently had a 97 318 with a A500 44RE all kinds
of shifting probs man alive I have never seen
such a dirty pluged filter in my life 90,000
miles never changed

some black in the bottom of pan is normal if you
find piles of clutch and band material than you
will have to take it farther

Also some small alm pieces are normal but a lot
and big chunks than again your in trouble

do the fluid and filter change first befor a shop
tells you you need a rebuild

FIRST thing to do is wiggle the shift lever, or shift into park, then neutral, then reverse. My truck has done this a few times over the years, and it's the linkage ever so slightly out of adjustment. This is free and easy. Then if no help, do as Larry suggested.
