Subject: belts-waterpumps and pulleys? IP: Logged
Message: i have taken off my ac pump
then i went with a bosh water pump
then i bought some march under drive pulleys
the water pump pulley is pressed on the bosh water pump. so i changed the water pump to a fenco-factory style. now the belt touches itself at the top of the water pump and idler pulley.
i got a smaller idler pulley off some type of car,but still the two parts of the belt touched. the new pulley is plastic which is lighter and smaller- it this better?
so i had to switch back to my bosh pump and the new bosh pump seems to have a smaller pressed pulley then the older one. my belt is 85.5 inches long and i still havent installed my crank under drive pulley. i just ordered a 84 inch belt and was told the next size down was in the 60 inch marks and that way to small.now with the plastic small idler pully it seems to resist the motor more.sorry for all the details- but the real question is whats the best combo of pulleys? is a shorter belt better than a long or is there some type of balance. i am running a griffin radiator for a chevy 350 4 row so theres no cooling problems, i also have no fan- had an electric but i dont drive in traffic. i bought a 75 amp altenator because i thought i had less internal moving mass and resistance.I am just trying to build a very efficient motor. id like to have all the bells and whistles so when i drop in a long blocks its crazy.
thanks
hopefully you can give me some info to help
lead me in the right direction faster!

Message: you should have read up on some post that are on here about the underdrives.... basicly they're useless when you come to a stop your alternator stops charging.... and they dont make that much of a difference... its a waste of money....i had a set on for about a month and got tired of my lights dimming at night and on warm days when you got the A/C on and get stuck in traffic on the beltway, your screwed cause it drains the battery quick... go back to stock setup... and save yourself from the headaches...

Message: if you have to have an underdrive pulley, the "crank" pulley only is no trouble. i've had one for about 2 yrs and no ill effects. only thing i noticed is that the engine seemed to rev a little quicker. but hey, i only gave 15 bucks for mine.
