Subject: brake cable IP: Logged
Message: could someone list step by step instructions on adjusting emergency brake cable or post a site that explains how to do this. I have an 02 dakota regular cab 3.9 5spd and emergency brake pedal almost goes to the floor and truck still drifts when it's applied. Dealer quoted me $50 just to look at it. I hate them!!!

Message: This is how I did mine on a 93, yours should be similar........
1) adjust the rear brakes
2) place masking tape on the brake cable just forward of the shielded cable (both sides of truck) coming out of the brake shoe support plate
3)press down on emergency brake pedal
4)check masking tape, it should now be a lot forward of the shielded cable. If not then the cable is frozen & will need to be freed up or replaced
5)If cables are free, press down on emergency brake
6)locate the cable tensioner on the passenger side of truck just aft of the tranny crossmember
7)place tape on the tensioner rod 1/4" away from the tensior bracket. Tensioner rod is the deep "U" shaped rod.......
8)tighten adjusting nut that is on the cable tensioner until the tape touches the bracket.
9) release parking brake & check rear wheels for free rotation
10)engage park brake & check for desired braking ability
