The mechanic removed the cat. converter because he tought it was making a bad noise in my truck. He put a straight pipe and not cat corverter anymore.

I live in Michigan so no smog check is require so I am O.K regarding that but.......

What is the bad and the ugly of not having the cat. converter?

It will cause a lossin back presure and effect
low end power

It will also trow the air/fuel ratio off some

get a repalcement and instal it your truck will
run better

truckperformance.com has the carsound highflow
around $90 slip fit just slip it on use 2
clamps and you ready to rock and roll

also make sure your o2 is working properly

you your self could take it off but it is illegal
for a shop to do that

you can use a test pipe for trouble shooting
but only temp.

I bought my 92 Dakota without a cat converter. It only has 1 O2 sensor in a location before the cat converter, I have not thrown any codes.

I didn't realize the cat converter could affect performance. Is performance affect for models with 1 O2 sensor or just the years that use 2 sensors, 1 before and 1 after the cat converter??

both obd 1 and 2

The obd 1 single o2 will not throw codes but the
air fuel ratio will be off slightly and the
performance do to the way the computer was
programed the performance will be slightly less
than what it should be

put a high flow like the carsound from
truckperformance.com you will be glad you did

Another thing running no cat will also show a
bad egr right away

We run cats on all the motors s/c included

Larry, it's illegal for ANYONE to disable or remove any emissions control device in the U.S.

http://www.epa.gov/oar/caa/caa205.txt

$2,500 fine for an individual, $25K for a shop. They risk the fine and being shut down.

Wow, somebody's on steroids. What do hurricanes and global warming have to do with this post? The original question was, What is the bad and the ugly of not having the cat. converter?
And part of the answer is, that it's illegal to remove it whether you have smog tests or not. Just answering the question. Sounds like you need to calm down.

That's the problem with this board. It's full of flamers and no mutual respect, which dilutes the helpful posting here. Other boards don't tolerate this behavior.

Yeah, that's the one I bought...according to the application guide thing on Magnaflow's website the 91006 is recommended for most of our trucks.

2 1/2" inlet 91000 series on truckperformance.com is the 91006 btw.

Thank you all for your replies. I see this topic has raised some eyebrows in many different ways.

Firstable, I am neither an enviromentalist nor I am a car savy. But I know that the cat.converter helps to regulate emission (or may be someone can define better the purpose of the cat. converter on a vehicle)to the enviroment, which I think everbody benefits from it. Having said that I will put another cat.converter on the truck as soon as I can.

Secondly, When I placed the question that is the bad and the ugly of not having a cat. converter?
I just wanted to hear from you,who I am sure have more experience on cars than I do, the effects of not having a cat. converter. Many of you provided me with many aswers to my post for which I thank you very much.

Let's all be respectful of one another so that we can make this message board as helpful as it can be. I personally enjoy reading aswers about any given topic regarding our Dakota trucks.

Thank you all and have a nice day.

Sincerely,

Alonso

Just gonna throw my two cents in... Running a vehicle without a cat is illegal, no matter who took it off, and no matter where you live. A state may not have smog checks, but even if a cat coverter is not a state regulated item, it IS a federally regulated item. Cats are regulated by the feds in every state and district of the United States! An engine that is required to have a cat converter must be run with a cat converter or you would be breaking a federal law.

If anyone has this problem they should see their dealer first. Dodge has a replacement program for certain year trucks. Even if you don't want a factory replacement you will have a brand new set of pipes to which you can mount your new hi-flow cat.
