Subject: New timing chain/More problems HELP! IP: Logged
Message:
1996 Dodge Dakota Club Cab,3.9 L, Automatic Tranny.
I had the timing chain replaced because it was doing the knocking sound that timing chains do when starting to go bad. The mechanic also replaced the water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt and the belt tensioner since he was already there.
So, I went to pick up the truck today and I drove it on the freeway and when I reached 50 miles and up the truck makes a weird grinding noise. The noise sounds like when the bearings on water pump go bad or something similar . The truck also has a small knocking sound which did not have before. It only does the griding noise when I driving the truck 50miles and up and not when in park.
So I went back to tell the mechanic and he checked it and he thinks the grinding sound has to do with the drive shaft. I dont see how the drive shaft can be the problems since the truck did not have a problem before.
I am mad because I took the truck to get fix and after paying $595 for all the work the truck is almost as bad if not worse that it was before.
What do you think can be the problem about the grinding like noise?
Or what do you think the mechanic did wrong that is causing that all the problems that the truck did not have before ?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Message: more info
does it only make the noise when its moving down
the road
or is the motor doing it while its standing still
I know with my truck if I don't drive it for a
few days the rotors rust instantly and make noise
for a few miles but than it goes away
you would think they would have a good mech but I
have seen some very crude people working at
dealers and shops I would not let them near any
thing I owned
call chrysler in detroit and tell them about this
and that you want them to pay for another dealer
to check it out
A lot of the trucks will rumble and feel like a
u joint when they drop into lock up at a low
rpm they will vibrate a little but not grind
I have seen a few where the muff was hitting the
drive shaft and make a grinding sound be sure it
has clearance may have hit it if he lifted it on
a hoist

Message: can you tell where the grind and knock sound are coming from?? Top of the engine, bottom, one side or the other, front of engine. Do you feel any vibration?? Does the grind and knock go away as soon as you slow down below 50 MPH? Do the grind and knock come and go at the same time?

Message: UPDATE ON MY TIMING CHAING REPLACING NIGHTMARE!!!
I went back to the shop where they replaced the timing chain so that they can figure out what the problem was.
The guy said he thought the noise had to do with the drive shaft. I said" OK, but that problem was not there when I brought the truck here" So to make the story short, he thought it was the cat converter that got blocked.I said" OK of you think that what causing the noise go for it" He cut the cat converter and put a straight pipe. Guess what? The problem still there!!!!!! So I said,"Enough if this guessing crap" because I strongly believe the problem has to do with the way they replaced the timing chain. They screw up in on way of another.
I took the truck back with me and told them that if they truck breaks down because of the job they did on it, they will be held responsible. What a f**** nightmare. I have read many posting here about how smooth the truck runs after they replaced the knoking timing chain, so I thought it would be like that with my truck. I never thought it was going to be like that. I just wish I had done the work myself and not paid some idiots $600 bucks to f**** up my truck.Recently, I replaced the eveaporor core on my truck and I did it succesfully. I just did not do it timing chain because I dont have a garage and it sucks doing that kind of work in the driveway.
Asnwer for larry,
Larry as soon as I reach 50mph I begin hearing the bearing-going-bad like sound. If I take foot out of pedal noise goes away. As soon as acelerate the noise comes back as long as I am on or above 50mph. I have also noticed that I can hear a little bit of granding noise when I am going to stop for a red light. Also I can feel the engine rattles a little which did not do before. )
It only does that noise when I am driving it. It does not do the noise when idle . What do you think it can be the problem? I was thinking miss align timing marks when the put timing chain back? Or they did not adjust the tension on the timing chain. Give me your thoughts please.
Aswer for Stevedak,
I can hear the noise on the driver side, top part of the engine like if the noise is coming near the power steering pump. And the truck does not vibrate when it reaches 50mph or up. That is why I was sure the noise had nothing to do with the drive shaft. I can hear the bearing-going-bad like-noise when I reach 50mph and up. I can noticed the knockin noise a little when waiting for a green light.
What do you think could be the problem Steve?
Once I cool down about the hole thing I will take the to another shop that has work on my cars for a second opinion. I will keep you posted.
I just remember that before I took the truck there I would run the truck up to 90mph and it would run very smoothly . I just took it there because they had done work for me before and I realized the timing chain was starting to knock and did not want to get worse.

Message: You say that you had the timing chain replaced, but you don't mention replacing the gear set. If I'm not mistaken, the 96 did not come from the factory with a tensioner, Did they install a tensioner? If they replaced the chain and not the gears and didn't put a tensioner on it might make some noise.

Message: Hi 94SPT,
I am not sure if they did or did not replace the gear set. He showed me all the parts he removed from the truck but I can not recall seeing an old set of gears. I would have to ask him about that. What I am pretty sure is that I dont believe he install a tensioner on the timing chain. I have the manual and I know it says it is a must to put a tensioner when replacing the chain or otherwise one will have the knocking sound to a lesser degree, which I am sure is what I am hearing.
I have read the manual many times so I know what kind of questions to ask when a problems like that arises. However, when you ask that kind of questions they get offended"Hey men I have been doing this kind of work for ..... years, so you think I don't not what I am doing?.
I will get a second opinion sometimes next week.
Thanks for all you help.

Message: I think you have a new chain on old/worn gears. I don't think your knock is related at all. Maybe you are just now noticing a knock that has always been there.

Less than a month of having the timing chaing replace and now my truck is really making a really loud noise(so loud that it bothers me because I am sure even people on the street can hear the noice on my truck).I can hear the noise now at all times(when idle, when waiting for a green light,I dont notice it much a high speed probably because the noise of the engine). I have tried to track the noise and it seems that it comes from underneath the truck below the water pump. I am sure is the timing chain making the noise again.
So I am going to take the truck back to the mechanic and ask him if he installed a new set of gears and a tensioner when he put the new timing chaing.
I will keep you posted.

Message: You said your dakota is a 96, mine is a 92. I have a gadget mounted on the cam thrust plate to divert oil to the timing chain. YOu need to make sure your chain is getting oil. If the chain was not getting oil, you can't just fix the oil problem, replace the chain and gears again. The sound below the water pump is the crankshaft gear. The only other thing in that area is your first main bearing...lets hope its the crank gear.

Message: UPDATE!09-20-06
I took my truck to the shop because of the knocking sound and the mechanic put the truck on the lift and told me that the flywheel is crack and that is causing the noise. He showed me the cracks(two places ) on the flywheel. And yes I finally was able to figure out where the knocking sound was coming from and is between the engine and transmission. My question to you is:
Does a cracked flywheel make a knocking sound like that?
Also all this knocking stuff began after they replaced the timing chain.
It is a roughly a $400 job so I am thinking I may take down the tranny and do the job myself.

Message: I've never heard of a flywheel cracking. I don't think your timing chain had anything to do with it. You need to figure out what caused the cracks, otherwise it will happen again. Are you missing any bolts between the engine and tranny?? something is bent and/or out of whack.

Message: Flywheels on manuals can crack if overheated due to a bad clutch, and I have heard of factory-defective flywheels on automatics. But something is not installed right or is out of balance.
