Subject: '98 Whinning noise

I just bought a '98 Dakota. I hear a faint, but distinct whinning noise coming from the back. (could almost pass for tire noise, but would expect a tone change on differrent road surfaces then). It starts near 30mph and the pitch increases as speed increases.

I'm reading some similiar posts pertaining to the rear diff. Can anyone confirm a possible connection? Is this a serious issue? Or possible as simple as changing fluid in the rear end?

Thanks

Joe, my '98 5-speed makes this sound, and has for as long as I remember. All parts of the drivetrain are still going strong after 60,000 miles of it, so to quote Australians, "No worries, mate!"

Just the rear-end hum! Don't worry about it. We had an old 77 Chevy van that did it until the engine died at 250,000 miles. Did it from the day we got it on. Just something to do with the limited slip.

My suggestion would be to drop the diff cover and inspect your gears. Had the same problem with my 89, the whine changed into a clunking noise. Pulled the cover and discovered that I stripped 4 teeth off my pinion gear and the diff carrier came out in two pieces. So if you are concerned with a whining noise I think it would be worth your time to inspect it.
