Subject: flareing rear steel brake lines IP: Logged
Message: I had to replace a wheel cylinder and in the process I twisted the steel line from the distribution block to the cylinder and it obviously broke. I have a new steel line but there's a metric fitting and flare on the end that goes to the distribution block and a standard fitting and flare where it goes into the cylinder. I had to buy a steel line that had metric fittings on both ends and cut one off so I can put the standard fitting on that end and flare it. I'm having trouble getting a good flare, mine all seem to be kinda lopsided for some reason. Any ideas??? It's a 98 dakota sport with the 8 1/4" rear end and rear wheel abs only.

Message: are you using a tubing cutter to cut the tubing? you need to get a good, clean, straight cut.

Message: Yep, brand new out of the package from autozone. For some reason I think it is the tubing cutter and the cutter wheel looks like it's at an angle but I'm not sure. Going to have my brother take it to the shop with him and have them cut n flare it.

Message: ck98daksport -
Are you positive it is a standard fitting on the cylinder? It just seems odd to split the fittings on a line.....
I assumed it was metric when I replaced my cyls & lines. All connections tighten ok & i've never had a leak.........

Message: Yep, double checked and even took the whole line into autozone with me. You can look at the threads on the wheel cylinder fitting and see that they are way different than the distribution block's fittings threads. My standard line wrench fit perfectly on the wheel cylinder fitting. I think it's just a case of DC not wanting the average joe to be able to take on these things at home and have to take it to the dealership.

Message: I don't suppose it's a case of half a switch over. DC may have left the master cylinder as double flared (standard american), but changed the wheel cylinders to a bubble flare (european). If that were the case instead of have a double flaring kit you would need a bubble flaring kit. I have both kits as my vw uses bubble flares.

Message: Thanks for the info,
I'll look closer next time!!
Pretty soon I will have to replace all my lines as they are really rusting out. I can not even see the wrench end of the fitting that is located on the structural crossover in the front of the tranny. Every time I hit the pedal I expect it to sink..........but it is right there.
The state uses a ton of salt fighting new england winter snow.
