I have a 2000 3.9 v-6 5-speed. occasionally,
usually when i'm about 1/4 of a tank of gas, my
truck wont go into gear. I wont be able to push my
stick into 1st or reverse. i can;t get it inot any
gear for that matter. Does anybody have any idea
why this might be? Once i get her goin she runs
fine its jsut that initial start up.

ROTFLMAO!! Oh man...ehem...too funny. ;)

Don't know about the "stick engagement" on your truck but can verify that you definitely need to get "her" going before things run fine. :P

Actually, about your truck (I'm leaving your girl problems up to YOU).....

I used to have a V-6 which was backed by the AX-15 5-spd tranny (I've heard that all the trucks are now getting the NV-3500), but towards its later years I often had the same problem. Mostly going into reverse. What I learned to do was this:
Pull the shifter over and as far back as it will let you go into the reverse gate. Once it feels like it wont' go, slowly begin to lift the clutch pedal off the floor. The shifter will slip into the gate and there you are. If you let the pedal out too fast, it will grind and crucnh its way into the gate so go easy on it until you have it down. See if that helps.

As for going into 1st, I am currently having problems with my NV-3500 going into 1st on my V-8. Kinda embarrassing at the stop lights, y'know? Here's a guy with fat tires, traction bars, loud exhaust, and the NHRA sticker and he can't find a gear when the lights go green..... Durrrrr.......

Sounds like the clutch is getting worn or there is air in the clutch hydraulic system. Check the clutch fluid level, if it is low fill it, then bleed it and you should be back to normal. Typically if it is a hydraulic system problem it will have trouble shifting cold, then get slightly better as it warms up.

Greg, I always thought it was the clutch that was causing my problems shifting into reverse, but when it was all said and done, I got 140,000 miles out of the factory clutch. And that was beating the sh!t out of it for the last 90,000 miles of its life. As it was, the only reason I pulled the factory clutch was that a bolt had broken from the center of the disk and was jangling around in the bell housing. When we got it out, there was still plenty of life on the disk and pressure plate.

What I'm saying is..... I would just go buy another factory clutch IF the clutch you have now is gone.

after 89 or 89 it appears to me that there is no bleader valve on the hydrolic clutch systems. Check your master cylinder and slave cylindfer and all the lines for cracks, ect. Also check the fluid level. It sounds a little like the cluth or maybe even the synchros in the tranny are going. I can take a look at her if ya ever make it to a cruise in. Your the one from annapolis right? If it turns out you need a clutch I would go with a stock one or maybe a Ram clutch. Everyone around here seems to love centerforce clutches, but in my opinion and all of my stang buddies hate em. I have a dual friciton and the clutch pedal feels like a freaking civic.

Just in case amos looks here again. Sounds like your ball-dent on the slid rail has malfunctioned. My guess is the spring broke that holds the ball in and this holds it in gear. Only other posibility with this paticular part is if you had the trany apart and put the rod in backwards.

So many problems .... So little time
