Subject: No 4th gear IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1996 Dakota Club Cab SLT 3.9L auto. It had been shifting hesitantly out of first gear and after reading a few things I replced the throttle position sensor last night as that seemed like a good place to start. Well now it wont shift into 4th gear. I'm sitting at about 3k rpm going 60 and while going over 40, if I take my foot off the gas and then use the gas again it lurches. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you

Message: well the check engine light came on after I changed the spark plugs, not sure why, but thats it. I put the old TPS in and I have 4th back now, but I also have the low gear problem, hesitating and stuff. I am going to get a new TPS, hopefully it was just a faulty part.

Message: Yup, that worked for me. And the old TPS measured good. But the new one fixed it.

Hi preston,
Is your 4th gear working OK? I have the same problem after having the tranny "rebuilt" . My truck do not go into overdrive. I have a shop looked at the truck and they said a return spring is missing and that could be the problem. I am waiting for the part to arrive to see if that fixes the problem. Please let me know if you got your truck fix.
1996 Dodge Dakota. 3.9 L , automatic tranny.
(needles to say I am really mad because I bought this truck like two months ago and all I have been doing is taking to the shop for one repair or the other.Hopefully I can have the truck running OK so I can dump it. )

Message: 96 and up have elect gov pressure control
the sensor and sols go bad and will cause all
this to happen
around $200 for the parts dealer only and even
than I have gotten new ones that did not work
but chrysler is well aware of this and will
exchange them at no cost
happens all the time why they ever went to this
was not a good idea
There is also another prob here some of the
newer trucks if you look in the cooling lines
there is what looks like a filter but its a check
valve and they get a little dirt in them and
stick shut and the trans will over heat and
burn up another fault here
If you get a new or rebuilt trans be sure this
is replaced we just take this right out and not
worrie about it
have seen many rebuilts go out in a very short
time because this was not checked replaced or
removed
a good trans shop will flush these lines while
doing this they will find this right away
