Message: I failed the Emissions test on my 1995, I have a K&N filter which for this year sits on the TB and sucks in hot air. They said to put back on my stock Air filter and airhat. I would not have thought my K&N set up would affect the emissions, Muffler is less that a year old. Any thoughts???

Message: Probably either EGR valve/solenoid swetup
or the cat ..
If either is 4,5 years old or more then there is your problem..
Did it fail all 3 -hydro-carbons ,Co and nitrogen oxides, badly = cat.
If only one , or just barely fail then go for EGR.

Message: It failed Positive Crankcase Ventilation System.
Is this a visual test and he's jerking me around, my wife took it to the gas station
Passed:
Exhaust Gas Recirculation System
Catalytic Converter
Fuel Evaporative System
Gas Cap Pressure test
Never got to the tailpipe emissions inspection, it all reads n/a.

Message: Did they try to sell something, like wiper blades or air filter or PCV, to your wife, and she said no? Maybe the guy got pissed.
So, put the stock air filter back and YOU return.
In Va, do they do a partial $ charge for the failed test, then when you return, finish the test and charge $ the rest?
That's what is done in NC.
Recently in NC, they changed so that 10+ year old vehicles do not need emissions testing.

Message: Got her for a gas cap, said my locking one wasn't sealing. Which she bought from them. In VA you pay the full amount and have 14 days to correct the problem and finish the test. I'll put the stock filter on and return myself. Thanks.

Message: Passed the retake, HC ppm were okay, CO% passed, the NO ppm just made it. The positive Crankcase Ventilation System is a visual test. He said I was venting back into the open filter and not back into the engine with the K&N filter. Seems like BS because the hose is below the filter and the gases should be sucked back into the engine as the stock filter does. Test is every two years, probably get a high flow cat before the next inspection. The cat's older than 5 years. I didn't tell the guy he sucks, sometimes it's better to just let it go, but I won't use that station again.

Message: From your results , new cat probably wouldn't hurt , but sounds as if EGR is getting marginal.
=Probably need for next test..

Message: The K&N filter is not the prob
bad o2, bad temp sensor, vac leak, bad PCV valve
or the egr, leaky injector
I have never seen a truck fail the test from
the intake and the K&N is 50 state leagle
also on the 95 the gas cap will not effect this
but it will on the obd2's 96 and up

Message: The fact that he never ran the test the first time ticked me off. He just failed it on a visual of the K&N filter. Maybe he also saw the MSD ignition, blaster coil and other mods and figured it wasn't legal. He asked me if I had a chip in it. No point in arguing, but it brings up a good point that some people think that any changes you make to factory specs make the truck illegal.

Message: hey ElmerFudd,
how much of an increase in power or "beter running engine" did you notice after you installed the 19 pound injectors??
thanks

Message: Thinking back when I added injectors I noticed the stock injectors had 1 hole and the FMS #19 had four holes. The 4 holes atomizes better giving better combustion, smoother running engine and acceleration. All of which seemed to help the power and mpg.

Message: Hey guys,
Sorry to barge in, but my '95 3.9L Magnum just failed 2 tests this week in WI. Both times I only failed NOx. Initial test I was 3.09 with a pass = 2.5.
I dropped in a set of platinum splitfires/Bosch wires/Gold contacts cap/rotor, as well as some fuel injector cleaner and premium gas and really screamed around the city for a day to try and clean things out. Went back and now my NOx is 2.7, dang, almost!
Test report talks of EGR, O2 potential problems. I see the sensor in front of the Cat, and the cat seems to be in good shape, from the old bang the cat and see if anything loose inside test haha! Truck has 110K on it. I plan to replace the egr valve on the valve cover and have a stock fit K & N filter currently.
Is there an EGR sensor somewhere as well, or should replacing the egr valve and cleaning/replacing that Probable O2 sensor before cat fix my emissions fail?

and the "Valve" in the valve cover is not the egr the is the "PCV"
the egr is located on the back of the intake

Message: Well, through hours of many different tools, I have not been able to break the Oxygen sensor loose from the bung in the back of the Y pipe, what a horrible positioning. I initially tried with a specialty crowfoot O2 sensor socket, but could not get a solid hold on the sensor without it starting to slip off the nut.
I've used PB blaster, WD-40, Propane torch, Mapp Torch, cut the wires and through my 12 point end on the nut, nothing. :(
My thought from here is to drop the Y pipe down but the studs/bolts at the flange to the exhaust manifold look like immediate breakers :(. Are there donut gaskets in there? Are those just 2 bolts and not studs threaded into the manifold? Thanks in advance for anyones insight!

Message: RichB,
Try decreasing the gap on the platinum spitfires to .04 gap or .035. If the EGR is valve is plugged that will cause NOX emissions to go up. Another thing you might try going to different plug one step colder will help to reduce combustion temperatures. If the plugs you have in your truck right now have a white coating on them instead of a light tan you combustion temps. are too hot this will cause the NOX failure.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: There are no donuts, just metal to metal.
But you'll have a hard time separating the y-pipe.
I tried on my 94 and had to give up. My y-pipe had a "nipple" on top that fits into a small cutout on the exhaust pipe. So that precludes being able to twist. You'll have to knock the y-pipe forward.

How many miles on your truck, check O2 sensor. If it has been more than 60,000 miles it might need replacement.

Message: I had an update but it was deleted, I did swap the O2, took about 6 hours, 4 new Manifold to y pipe bolts 3 varying powers of torches, some good old fashion destruction of old one and it is replaced, now we'll see if that was the only problem : ) >
