besides that your tach is off the V6 cuts at
4800 but will hit 5000rpm
so your about 400 off not uncommon for a factory
tach

superchips or a flash
you can also hold the key to start it will knock
both rev and speed limiters off
the valves will float around 5600rpm

Message: hey Larry
how long do you have to hold the key to knock off the limiters? cuz i've tried doing that for the 100mph speed limiter with my truck for a couple seconds and it didnt work at all...
and for the valves, im having my engine rebuilt with hughes 0814 camshaft, 9.8 pistons etc... should i buy new valves, or bigger valves?? id like to have this motor running great and powerful and last me a good time because i dont plan on pulling her out or opening her up again
your expertise advice is greatly appreciated!!
thanks

Message: another question Larry...
how many miles should i
drive my rebuilt 3.9 before
opening her up?
after how many "problem free"
miles should i be confident
with the rebuild?
what other precautions should i
take because this motor is in a
daily driving truck!
thanks

Message: I run a rebuilt 3000 miles on castroil gtx 10w30
than I switch to synthetics
I have redlined motors with 1000 miles if they
are put togather right it will not hurt them
think about this as with the many of the V8's I
have rebuilt in boats or a race car do they
take the time to break them in before racing
92 to 95 just get the V6 performance comp there
is no rev or speed limiter
with the hughes springs they will easily rev
5500 6000rpm these springs will float around
6200rpm
if there is anything wrong like a nicked crank
or something it will show up in the first 3000
noise or lose of oil pressure
My 69 road runner with the blue printed and
ballanced 383 six pack was run 7000 rpm before
it had a 1000 miles on it never had a prob but
I did not hold it there long untill it had more
miles on it
I bet a guy $100 that I could run wide open 1st
gear for 1 mile well I got my $100 drove the car
20,000 miles and sold it to my brother he ran
over 100,000 miles on this motor than one day
broke a piston

so the stock valves will be fine?

Message: stock valves are good to go
You will need new retainers but the clips keepers
what ever you like to call them are fine unless
you want new ones to go with the new retaines I
always replace them there not to expensive
I am talking about a spring change here to run
the higher lift cams stock springs will bind
just over .500

i got the retainers springs cam rocker kit
and hardened pushrods from hughes engines.
now i know down the road after driving this
truck easy im gonna need to do some work on
the transmission..
a while back you directed me to this kit from
summitracing TCI220500 right?
if i remember correctly i need to get some
other parts for the transmission.. like
a TV valve and some other things
if this isnt the set up you recommended,
what do you use in your trucks?
thanks again larry you da man!

Message: tciauto.com
call or order right from them they ship fast
transmissionpartsusa.com
new TV valve plunger and sleave $30
use orginal spring with 2 shim washers either side
You can get a replacement 1-2 accumulator valve
from them also but its the same cheap plastic
go to redrider.us and you can get an alm one
with steel seal rings for $15 the cheap plastic
is $30
just follow the directions in the kit use carb
cleaner on valve body
heavy duty towing setup
the street plus with the #7 ball removed and the
blocker rod if you like super hard tire cirping
shifts
the towing setup will also chirp 2nd when you get
on it and down shift reaction is vastly improved
with the TCI 220500 kit they also have the
instructions right at there site to look at and
excellent customer tech service you dont have
to wait half a day if you need help maybe 2 minits
this kit will work in 89 to 98 trucks and does
a mush better job with the body than the transgo
The kit also comes with a new gasket and high
flow filter brass screen not paper
oh ya set the presure at 1 1/4 1 3/16 street plus
use good fluid like amsoil and you will have 1
great shifting and tough trans

Message: the heavy duty towing set up will please most and
still will shift good for normal street use the
more you get on it the firmer it gets its what I
run in my trucks
street plus will shift hard all the time I am
talking tire chirping neck snaping shifts
the transgo is ok but with that kit I used to
end up going back in the trans 2 or 3 times to
get what the customer wants
They used to do almost the same to the body as
TCI but they updated for all the newer trans and
stoped the valve body mods that should be done
If your really into it go street plus and instal
the cusion blockers change servo springs to the
old 727 springs and it will shift gears in less
than a second and reall snap your neck racing only
stuff
You can install the kit without the other parts
If the TV is wore you will get eradic shift points
not good
If the 1-2 acc is blowing by it can cause soft
shifts and bump shifts were it will bang in gear
not good
That is why I have been replacing these parts
right away and avoid these probs and having to
drop the body again because of it.

I like the tow kit you explained.
Im going to be rebuilding my own trans soon and i only want to spend $1000
I like the tow kit you described.
is there any whole trans rebuild kits you highly recommend?
I was going to sell my dakota but now i think i will keep it quite sometime. someday i want to turn it in to a track racer. i want to be able to go up to Willowsprings and compete with the BMW M3. so when i rebuild the trans i want it to be good on the track and the road and be able to handle at least 500hp.
thanks for any info you can give me.

Message: Hey Larry I have a '91 Dakota V6 ofcourse with a few minor mods MSD Ignition+Coil, K&N and such and was wondering how high my engine is capable of reving safely i ahve both stock and aftermarket tachs limiter seems to kick in at about 4500RPM the redline on the factory tach is marked at abour 4800rpm (I acctually just got a cluster from a Dakota Sport with tach and 125mph speedo so I had the after market tach for a while before the stock one)but I was wondering if there was any way other than a chip to remove my rev limiter as I know the pre 92 dakotas are slightly less computer controlled atleast to my knowledge...

Message: SMR transmission has rebuild kits that include
the shift kit and excellent instructions they
don't just tell you what to do they tell you
what it effects none of the other kits do that
they also come with a complete parts break down
and exploded view of the trans and body
For the average guy with a little knowlage this
is the way to go around $500
All the other rebuild kits come with all the parts
and absolutly no instructions
