Subject: Tranny Cooler IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 Dakota w/ 3.9 and Automatic. My tranny is being rebuilt right now and I want to put an external cooler on it and bypass the factory cooler completely. What is a good brand (model number if possible) for this type of application. Truck is 2WD and is not used for anything except normal daily driving.
Thanks -

Message: I installed a tranny cooler off the shelf from the local parts store (Advance Discount Auto). I installed it in series with my radiator cooling so that the tranny fluid went into the radiator then thru the tranny cooler and back to the tranny. This gives better cooling performance. Besides, if you just use the tranny cooler alone, you are wasting the cooling capacity of your radiator.

Message: What's the best way to clean out the OER radiator cooler? I'm sure there is a good amount of gunk in there from the tranny clutchs, etc.

Message: It's known as an auxiliary cooler for a reason. It's a supplement to the radiator cooler, not a replacement for it. If the auxiliary one is smaller than the one in the radiator, he's made things worse.

Message: Hey Bob Lincoln I hate to say it but .. you are wrong about the auxiliary cooler being smaller than the one in the radiator . The one in the radiator is only one tube running from the top to the bottom. If you measure the total length of the one in the radiator and then measure the total lenth of the tube used to make the aftermarket one you will find the aftermarket longer

Message: Ok .. I missed that .. BUT there is no such thing as a aftermarket cooler being smaller ... your causeing him to worry about something that doesnt exist. It would have to be a ONE pass cooler and even then it MIGHT be shorter..... and I have NEVER seen a one pass tranny cooler....
