Subject: 4 wheel drive problem IP: Logged
Message: I had to replace right side Half Shaft and Output Shaft on my 4wd unit. Some how the splined shaft spun inside the half shaft coupling. The left side looks fine. I don't use 4wd very often. Any ideas how this happend? Anyone have similair 4wd problems? Thanks.

Message: Not so...
Don't get disappointed. You are in the non-members section so I wouldn't expect too much help. I am not a member either which probably explains why my Air Conditioning question went unanswered.
Even though you hardly ever use 4WD it is constantly spinning. You probably got a truck that was built on a Friday...
Hang in there!

Message: A bad wheel bearing will take out the shafts fast
The front shafts on the dak 4x4,s under heavy use
usualy go around 80 to 100,000 heavy 4 wheeling or
snow plowing
ocasianal use of the system they will run 250,000
miles
bad front end parts excessive play when enguaged
they will cause a woble this will also take its
tool on the shafts
They run very troble free
the worst I have ever seen was a guy we towed in
with a locked front end asked him if he ever
checked the fluid he said no when we removed the
cover mud and water ran out she was toast LOL

Message: Larry, I did have to replace the front wheel bearing units on my truck before I had the 4WD problem. I also had to have the upper ball joints replaced per 'Recall' This was also before the 4WD problem.
Thanks Larry for your help.
Bryan - I think my truck was made on a friday "Graveyard Shift" :(

Message: 2002 Dakota, will not disengage from 4 wheel. It
tries 3 times; can hear it clicking and then locks
back in 4wd. It appears the switch is internal. I
had this problem last winter but it seemed to have
cleared up itself. not this time, thoughts?
