Most people would give their left nut for their truck to sound like a V8...

Okay...on a more serious note...is it a low roaring sound. Like for instance...your clutch fan being engaged. If that's the case, the clutch could be sticking.

It's a 2003 Dodge Dakota. 3.9L, 2wd (unfortunately), automatic. It's just now surpassed 83,000km.

When I start the truck up the engine is very loud. Much louder than it normally runs at. When that happens and I drive, it seems as if it's not going as fast as it should for the amount of pressure I am putting on the gas pedal and of course it's much louder. It literally sounds like a more powerful engine without the...power. It last for about 5 minutes and then it eventually will go down to the sound I'm accustom to and perform normally.

As for the revving while in park. As soon as I put it in park the engine will rev between 1000-1500rpm for 3 or so seconds. Sometimes that will be the end of it, other times it will do that and then still go up and down moderately. It just started last week.

I'm not the most adept with vehicles so any information would be appreciated greatly.

i'd suggest checking all your vacuum lines for leaks, especialy around your brake booster and intake. seems to be common spots for little leaks or complete breaks in the lines.would make sense for the surging of a couple seconds and then coming back down.

try cleaning your idle air control back of
throttle body spray hole out with carb cleaner
and clean valve but do not push pull or twist
on the plunger

a bad IAC
a bad TPS
obd2 the rear o2 will do this also reving when
gears are changed to park or nutral

a few things to check these can also cause
stalling probs when changing gears rev up than die
