Subject: OBD2 broken? IP: Logged
Message: I've got a quandry. I've got a 97 dakota ( only year you can pull the codes with the OBD1 trick ), but even putting a scanner ( obd2 ) on it, no codes can be pulled. It won't flash codes on the dash either. The truck seems to be running in limp mode, and I'm not sure where to start looking.
Anyone hear of this before?
Thanks, Mike

Message: Start pulling plugs to sensors and see if the scanner will work.
And the ignition key must be in the ON position.

Message: I'll give that a try.
The power from what I read comes from the Cigarette lighter circuit.
The fuse is good, but I'm not getting power to the cigarette lighter, nor are my dome/curtesy lights working.
I've got a haynes manual, but the wiring diagrams aren't easy to trace. This is the first vehicle this new that I've had to do this kind of electrical work on, so I'm not quite used to the layout ( symbols/lettering ).
Seems to me that if there were no power to the PCM, the truck shouldn't be running. IF there is power to the PCM, why isn't there power( signal ) from the DLT connector.

Message: Hmmm, reading around and taking a close look at this truck...
I don't currently have the IOD fuse installed. It's gone. From what I read, this hooks up to the Dome lights and the cigarette lighter. Apparently it's purpose is to be pulled from the fuse box if you store your vehicle for less than a month, so that electronics that draw a small amount of power, such as the stereo's memory ( I suppose the cigarette lighter for anything that might be plugged in in this world of accessories ).
I'm gonna get me an IOD fuse and see what happens. Maybe I'll get lucky! Or, I won't, and it'll blow due to some problem I get to trace. Won't know until I try!

Message: Have you tried starting the truck with that fuse pulled? If you have, once you replace it, pull the battery cable for a minute or two, then hook it back up. I pulled the fuse for mine a while back, and forgot I had pulled it. When I finally put it back in and started the truck up, it idled at around 2100 RPM. I had to disconnect the battery to reset the PCM before it idled normally:)
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Message: Never had the fuse in it when I bought the truck, but I'll take the advise! I'm going to pick one up tomorrow hopefully.
I'm going to the boneyard, as none of the auto stores I talk to seem to know what an IOD fuse even is! It took a while to explain it to the dealer...they said 12 bucks. I bet I can get a used one out of the yard for less than 5.

Message: I have seen some where 1 of the pins on the
scanner connection somehow got pushed back than
the scanner will not work at all
the old under hood connections I have had to mess
with them for hours to clean and get a connection
so the scanner would work
sounds like a wire or connection somewhere
computers do go bad but its very rare in all the
years working with these trucks I only ran into
1 bad computer it ran like crap when cold but
the scanner worked everything showed normal
it was the comp under 190 crap at 195 ran fine
you would have to floor it to get it to move
one of those that really frosts the old rocker

Message: Well, color me stupid. Apparently I was reading the diagram on the fuse cover wrong and installed a relay ( above the flasher relay ) which I probably don't need. I found the fuse, it's the one with the black plastic enclosure that allows you to remove the fuse without pulling it out completely....duh!
Funny, now I have a cigarette lighter and dome lights again!

Thanks for any help!

Message: Easy. Put the key in the ignition, and not starting the truck, cycle the key - Key On, Key off, Key On, Key Off, Key On. Then watch the Check Engine light flashes. It'll flash the first digit, then pause, then flash the second digit. When it flashes 12, you've reached the end of the codes.

Message: You actually have an OBDII BigCityTexan, and depending on what part of the year your vehicle came out in 97, the engine codes may show up on your digital trip odometer like mine, and the "all codes shown" code is 55. 12 means you have lost power to your PCM in the last 50 or so key cycles.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Message: Well, my check engine light is one, and stays on ( I think due to the cat ), does the OBD2 system actually display a code on the digital trip/odometer? Mine does not, it simply has a check engine light on, I haven't seen anything else, and I've used/reset the tripodometer twice since I've gotten the truck a week ago.
