Subject: help! Buying a 90 Dakota 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: Hey!
So i'm looking at buying a 1990 Dakota v6 5sp 4x4 dakota....I'm new to the dodge world...and truck in general
looked at it tonight....didn't get to get in or start it [was at a shop....they were closed] but the body was very good, also came with bedliner and tonneau cover.
however...
looking underneat the truck, I noticed the frame had been repaied on the driver side with some plate metal welded to the frame in a few spots. welds looked good...metal was thick.
I also noticed that what looked like a transfer box [basically under the seats] might have been leaking a bit. [this doesn't concern me a ton...but should it?
how are these trucks with emmisions usually?
keep in mind this truck is just a beater for me...i won't be racking up the KM on it ....but it will be my daily driver come winter. I'm quite handy and do most repairs myself when required. So anything mechanical I can take care of for the most part.
anything eles I should look out for with these trucks?

Message: The transfer case has 2 seals 1 front drive shaft
this requiers removing the yoke to replace
rear just pull the shaft
both seals are around $15 each the rear very easy
the front may need a puller to remove yoke
a garage for both seals around $100 or tell them
to replace them before you get the truck
it could be a gaskit leak but if its just a small
drip not worth the money to remove case disasemble
and replace the gasket
recintly we got a new 234HD and the gasket leaked
right away we did replace this one its like a 3
hour job to replace
the frame the truck must have been in an acident
this would be ok as long as it is not out of wack
causing front end alignment problems
The 90 was a throttle body injection set up and
the pre mag 6 the 4x4's got around 18 to 20mpg
I have a 1990 dakota myself with just over
250,000 miles on it it uses about 1qt of oil
every 3000 miles but does not smoke and it still
runs great and is getting 20mpg I don't even
know if the timing chain was ever replaced.
Just be sure it starts and runs good and shifts
good clutch ok
what we have found with the sticks is they
develope some hard shifting and once in a while
stick in rev changing the fluid out to a good
synthetic will help if not eliminate these probs
actualy its more of a anoyance than a prob
Thats about it besides that there were no real
isues with the G1 pre mag trucks they are a very
reliable truck and very tough

Message: Dr Funk,
I'd have J&J go through it first. Ok, maybe somebody closer. If the frame is a ? have a frame shop look at it.
How good and how strong?
521,000 miles on the original engine and transmission of my 98 3.9 automatic 2WD, using Amsoil. Passed smog this year.
Secret hint; almost empty tank, add a full bottle of Amsoil PI and go for the smog test.

frame work tires cost and not being able to
bring the front end into alignment specs would
be a prob
500,000 miles wow thats great as I always said
with good maintainance and using good syn fluids
these trucks run forever
I went about 3 months ago to get a 3.9 mag motor
to rebuild and there was not even a 92 or newer
truck in my friends bone yard and only 8 G1,s
see he is a scrap yard not a parts dealer but man
92 being 14 years old they should be showing up
in his yard just like every other make and modle
begain to pile up there but no dakotas yet
That just tells me again what a reliable long
lasting truck these dakotas are
