You are going to lose some antifreeze...but not much. When you remove the 2 bolts holding the housing you will lose what is in the upper radiator hose. About 1 pint if that. Don't take off the radiator cap...it will keep a vacuum in the block and it won't come pouring out once you remove the t-stat.

Good luck trying to scrape away the old gasket on the block though...that was fun. Leave the old t-stat in place while you scrape away the gasket so nothing can fall into the engine block itself. I had mine changed in about 45 minutes including the scraping part.

Easier (and less messy) method of removing coolant before removing t'stat: Use the drain (pet-cock) on the bottom of the radiator. Drain out about 1/2 gallon and there's almost no mess.

I tried to drain some coolant by opening the drain (pet-cock) on the bottom of the radiator and nothing happened. Not one drop of coolant came out. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Ralph

There's also another way to do this without having to drain any fluid from your radiator. Get one of those little hand-squeeze siphon pumps at the auto parts or hardware store. Sipon the coolant out of the upper radiator hose, especially the down hose at the T-stat. Then, remove the hose...you'll only have seepage from the little bit of coolant that the pump couldn't get out. Keep the hose higher than the radiator inlet to keep coolant from flowing back into it. Should be a piece of cake...

I did mine in about fifteen minutes, the hardest part was getting the hose off by the block. Just make sure you tighten the bolts hard enough..... that's where I messed up.
