hey, I got no help to offer, but I'll be eavsdropping. Want to do the same to my '96, but might settle for 5.2L. I like the 3.9 just not a V8, just my opinion... seems almost like waisting money building a 6.

I did it to my 99 dakota, items i know you need are a pcm for a 5.9 for YOUR year truck, wiring harness, i have one for a 97 model, which for me the only one that would work was a 99 model, also a fan shroud for a v8, everything should work including the trans,although it might not last long??? mine lasted for around 9 months but my motor was far from stock!! Hope this helps its a easy swap if your mechanically inclined!! Don't forget about the extra o2 sensor you will need to put in, in the left bank.

I want to do a similar swap... 3.9L to 5.2L/318. Is it the same amount of work or less? Also, I have been told that only a 1997 tranny will fit my 1997 Dodge Dakota 2wd. Any help is useful... aslo, what engine is the best to go with for the optimum gas mileage, horsepower etc. etc.... I want the best bang for my buck.

RE: swapping 3.9 to 5.9 in responce to your question i would put a 5.2 in better gas mileage and just as good power as a 5.9! a 360 will get you maybe13-15mpg but a 318 will get 18+

When I did my swap I put a 5.9 360 out of a 97 ram and dropped it into 99 dakota and kept reverything from my v6, trans, motor mounts, and all acc.. the only thing i need was a pcm for my year truck, wiring harness, and fan shroud, also had to weld in a new bung for o2 sensor thats it pretty simple!!

ok thank you everyone now where can i get a 03 sensor 03 fan shroud 03 5.9 pcm and an 03 wiring harness o and an 5.9 engine with less than 50k much help would be appreciated

will the bell housing mount upi correctly and will the exhaust mainfolds from the 360 mount to the stock v6 exhaust system ? and do i need a manual 360 engine since i have a 5spd ?
